History Of Spyware, Adware And Malware
The history of spyware is fairly instructive. Especially for those who are serious about wanting to understand this menace. There is no denying the fact that spyware is today not only fairly widespread but also an extremely serious threat to any computer user.
Today the spread of spyware is clearly evidenced by the development of the huge anti-spyware industry. There is no way that this would have have taken place if there was no huge and growing demand for protection against spyware. In fact it is virtually impossible for anybody to venture online without being exposed to spyware in some way. It is naturally much more dangerous when one has no idea what it is or where it started. The truth is that a vast majority of persons who are relatively new to the World Wide Web, have no idea what spyware is or the potential threat that it poses. As in many other instances, ignorance can be fairly dangerous.
The first recorded use of the term "spyware" is said to have occurred on October 16, 1995 in a Usenet post about Microsoft's business model. The term was actually first used to refer to hardware positioned for espionage use. This changed in 2000 when Gregor Freund used the term to refer to his ZoneAlarm personal Firewall.
Another significant development in the history of spyware took place in early 2001 when Steve Gibson, founder of Gibson Research discovered to his alarm that advertising software had been installed on his system. It appeared to him that the sole purpose was to steal personal information from him. On further investigating the problem, he discovered that it was adware from companies called Aureate and Conducent. Gibson then quickly developed and released the very first anti-spyware program called OptOut. Many more anti-spyware programs were to follow and today there is a wide and dizzying selection for users to choose from.
