Why Keyword Research Is Critical

By Halstatt Pires

Once you start an internet business, you quickly learn the value of keyword research. In fact, keyword research is critical to your success.

Most people do not really understand what keyword research is. They think is simply insight into the exact terms that people are searching for related to their business. In truth, keyword research is insight into the needs of your customers or clients. When you perform keyword research, you're looking at the exact needs of your potential customer or client.

Think about that for a second. Your pool of customers or clients is telling you exactly what they want. Could you possibly ask for a more valuable piece of information? Okay, you could ask for credit card numbers, but I digress.

Once you have your keyword research, there are a couple different ways to use it. Most people think it is only necessary if a site is being optimized to obtain rankings in the search engines. This is incorrect.

PPC campaigns are keyword intense. By PPC, I mean Google Adwords, Yahoo/Overture and so on. These advertising platforms are famous for supplying somewhat vague or flat out incorrect keyword phrases when you do research on them. Instead of using their platforms, use the keyword list you generated previously. You might be able to score some low bid, high traffic positions that greatly improve your return on investment.

A second use of your keyword research can be found in articles. Many people publish articles for the purpose of generating links to their site. You can, however, use the articles to generate traffic directly to your site by piggy backing the high rankings of some of the directories. For instance, you can use a prime keyword phrase as the title for an article and submit it to one of the five or six big directories. The article will usually pop high in the search rankings, which means people will read it and see your name and a link to your site.

The final use for your keyword research is search engine optimization. The basic idea is to identify the needs of your prospects and build out pages that provide solutions. The keywords you researched represent the needs and you should build corresponding pages to supply the solution. Obviously, search engine optimization is a bit more complicated, but this is the basic idea.

There are many tasks to be mastered in the internet marketing game. Of all of them, keyword research is right at the top of the most important.

Tip: Evaluate an SEO company by looking for testiimonials from their clients.
