Affiliate programs can be defined as any type of Internet marketing program where sales, leads, or other types of traffic are directed to a "merchant" website. The publisher (or affiliate - these terms are interchangeable) receives a portion of the income that is generated by visits to the website and, sometimes also earns off of any action that is taken during this visit. Because of this, affiliate programs are also known as "pay-per-sale" programs.

A few years ago, affiliate programs were not as numerous as they are today; therefore, it was easy to make money. The program did not even have to be that good. However, the fact that some of the earlier programs were of poorer quality than those of today caused problems, both ethically and legally. “Spamming,” unlawful use or appropriation of trademarks as well as false advertising were but a few of the situations that occurred as a result of unethical actions.

Today, affiliate programs are seeing an increase of growth and utilization. For this reason, publishers and website owners must make sure that advertising that is projected over the Internet is of sufficient quality and accuracy that it can capture the attention of a visitor to the site.

In order for an affiliate program to succeed, a large amount of hard work must go into building it. The growing popularity of affiliate programs can make it hard for a business or industry to do this type of work “in-house.” In other words, it is sometimes better to allow an organization that specializes in affiliate programs to provide the services necessary for a successful venture. There are many companies that provide affiliate program services. A quick search on the Internet will provide a business with many choices in this field. Once a company has decided whom to use, they can then work together to come up with the best plan for utilizing this type of Internet marketing.
