Podcasting - Exciting Technology
By Julia Hall
The popularity of podcasting is soaring in the technology arena, and it is good to have an understanding of exactly what it is and what benefits one may derive from this new technology. Basically, podcasting is likened to radio broadcasting with the exception that if offers more options than radio ever dreamed. Listeners have the capability of deciding exactly what programming they want to hear and where and when they want to hear it. This technology is great for people on the go who have no time to rearrange schedules to fit broadcast times. It also provides an option for listeners to record and store audio for listening at later times.
Simply put, podcasting is online content delivered via RSS feeds. Blogging has transformed some writers in journalists, and it is expected that podcasting will turn many podcasters into radio personalities as they receive more and more exposure. There are many uses for podcasting with it being used for self-guided walking tours of tourist attractions giving them informational content. Music podcasts provide interviews with singers and musicians and are great promotional clips. Talk shows use podcasting for organizational and investor news, sportscasts, and news coverage and commentaries. Business and organizations use podcasting to provide instructional and information materials. Other uses include reading stories for the visually-impaired or children’s groups. The length of a podcast usually is between 10 and 30 minutes with some being longer.
Podcasting technology works the same as a standard RSS feed reader except the podcast feed contains an audio file and instead of reading content, you listen to it. It is important to know that although podcasting was named for the iPod, one does not have to use an iPod to listen to audio files. They may be heard on iPods, MP3 players, web sites with links to audio files, many standard RSS readers, or other devices. Since the inception of podcasting in 2004, there have been many creative ways to provide or publish content that the listener has control over hearing and seeing.
Podcasting is a developing and prospering audio and publishing medium with a potential for great benefits to both podcasters and listeners. It is a simple and relatively inexpensive way of syndicating one’s audio files online and a great means of promoting products and services. Instead of reading, people can listen to your voice and get a more personal connection. One can increase their business as it enables one to reach new customers who may be in the market for your products. You are talking to them as an expert as you share information, and this same audience promotes your business. The best thing is you don’t have to be an expert or have any technical smarts to start, and you have a great opportunity for your voice to be heard around the world. This fantastic technology gives you the opportunity to host your own show – the same as many famous radio personalities.
