1. Find the right niche.

2. Watch out for the competition
Go To Google search engine and type in your selected topic, for example "self development", if it has under 30,000 results of competing websites then you can select that topic.
Be sure to check also for the monthly searches by using free tools such as freekeywords.wordtracker.com, just type in the keyword and see the searches result, if it has around 100 searches last month then it's a good niche.

3. Sell a product.
You can sell hundreds ebooks or software related to your selected topics, you can join some well known affiliate merchants such as paydotcom.com or clickbank.com and start selling products in your website. If you want to sell something then ebooks/software, such as electronic, even furniture you can visit http://www.associateprograms.com/
4. Promote your website.
This is the most important step in doing an online business, you can have like a jaw dropping, shinning products but if nobody is visiting your website then you will end up with zero sales, to promote your products you can use free traffic (organic traffic that come from the search engines) or paid traffic using services such as Google AdWords or Overture.com, you can also promote your website using socialbookmark, you can automate your bookmarking here onlywire.com.
You can also write some articles and submit it to articles directories, I think this is the most recommended strategy ever. It helps building a good credibility and a good strategy to increase your link popularity.
