Build Your Homepage to Get Results
By Ryan S Price

There are a number of components that should be on every home page. If you have a website, of you are planning on building a website, this article is for you. You don't need html experience, or tons of money to hire a top web designer to get results. Take a look at these personal tips of mine on creating a home page that gets visitors to take action.

Don't cram your entire website on your homepage. One of the most common mistakes people make when building a homepage is making it too busy. There are too many links, pictures, and tons of information screaming at the visitor from the first second. This is a major turn off, and it makes it difficult for the reader to remember why they came to your website in the first place. The first tip is to keep it simple.

On the other side of the coin, some people don't add enough information on their homepage. It is not enough just to display "Subscribe here" or "Contact Us" without any other details. You need to offer enough information on the page so that they will want to subscribe for more information or contact you. The next tip is don't be a mystery.

Use clear headlines that outline benefits. Don't list features, but benefits. Instead of talking about what you have, talk about what the customer will get out of it. For example, if a cordless phone has a speed-dial feature, say that they can save time (a benefit) with speed-dial.

Use images to convey the benefits when you can. Striking images can illustrate to the customer what the product or service can do for them. For example, if your product will save them time, show an image of someone having fun or relaxing. The visitor will get the idea.

Make sure that your layout is appealing to the eye. Staring at the computer for a long period of time can hurt people's eyes, so don't clutter the page with tons of writing. Most people are afraid of pages with text, text, and more text with no paragraph breaks. Spread things out nicely with blank spaces and pictures. Also, cut down on the text, and only include essential information on the homepage.

Display your contact information as if you are proud of it. Make it easy for them to get in touch with you. After all, isn't the purpose of your website to get them to come to you for your products and services? Rather than make is a scavenger hunt, put it right there on the home page where they can find it.

Offer a brief description of what you do and what you can offer the visitor. This part of your homepage should only be two or three sentences at the most. If you want to provide your background or purpose behind the product, that is fine, but make sure any information you add is relevant.

Some people respond better to images. If you can add small icons or thumbnail images that are relevant to your business, do it. This will increase your chances of getting those visitors to take action.

If, and only if, the above components have been successfully added to your homepage, you can add more content describing more about your products and services. This is for the type of customer who likes to research things further before they decide to buy.

My final tips are adding a link to your privacy policy and disclaimer. If you are collecting personal information, add a link to your privacy policy on the footer of the page. Depending on the nature of the content your provide, particularly if you offer advice, you may want to consider adding a disclaimer. This will protect you legally, and it is a good idea to get professional advice on that.

Make sure that your visitors see what you want them to see on your homepage right away. Use these tips to build a homepage that gets results!
