I have a twelve-year-old male lab who weighs 34kg. On the vet's chart this is the uppermost weight for a lab. Yesterday I went to the kennels where I got him from and was astounded really to see how much heavier their dogs were - and they looked great. He is a big-built boy and I think he needs to be somewhat heavier - my question is how to go about this safely. Currently he has 325g dried food per day, which is correct for a dog of around 45kg! He is healthy and active and walks between 30 mins and an hour each day. Please help!

That is a fine weight for a male or female labrador, my female is in good condition for a house pet at almost three years of age and she is 70.01 pounds! Labs can get anywhere from 60/100 pounds. My friend had a male Labrador when he was younger and he was 100 pounds and well built. For the show right or anything like that you want a lab to be 60 pounds for a bitch and 65/70 for a dog. There are many 'Gaint' labs out there they are more prone to hip displasia. If he is in good condition.... ribs can't be seen but can be felt easily leave him at his weight. For food feed what the bag recommends is what I always say, if he seems really hungry and your feeding what the bag suggests feed a bit more if he isn't eating the last of his final meal of teh day reduce what your feeding.
