how to install hardwood flooring

By Adrian Whittle Platinum Quality Author

Hardwood flooring is an increasingly popular choice in flooring over the traditional carpet or laminate flooring. There are a few advantages that hardwood flooring has over carpet, namely, it is easier to clean and lasts longer. It can give a room a classic, elegant look and will last for years. Given that it is a bit more expensive than carpet or laminate and that it is likely to be in place for many years. It is important to install it properly. This article will cover how to install hardwood flooring and some ideas on long term maintenance.
There are a wide range of wood types that you can get for your flooring nowadays. The old favorites like oak, walnut, beech and maple are available along with a number of other types of woods. Most offer the same qualities in terms of longevity and durability so the choice of type of wood comes down to your personal likes and dislikes or the overall look of the room. You want the flooring to act as a counterpoint to the rest of the room, including the walls and the furniture.
Once you have selected the type of wood, then installation is quite easy. The modern hardwood floors are installed over the existing sub floor. The sub floor can be anything from wood to concrete. In terms of heating and sound insulation, an overlay of course fabric is placed in between the subfloor and the hardwood floor. Having a soft fabric between the two surfaces also lets the flooring have more give when you walk on it. This makes it more comfortable and realistic. The flooring itself can be fitted together via tongue and groove. This gives the floor a solid and tight connection.
Most companies that sell hardwood floors offer services to fit the flooring or detailed instructions if you want to do it yourself. Depending on how much time you have on your hands it may be an idea to hire their services or get a contractor in. If you have time on your hands or are interested in learning DIY skills then it is a fairly easy project to complete.
Modern hardwood floors need very little maintenance because they are finished with a protective surface layer. This will make them resistant too water but it is still advised not to let liquid sit on hard wood floors for any length of time. The flooring is also resistant to scratching and denting but if you have any furniture that has sharp or abrasive parts then you should put some protective fabric like felt in between the furniture and the flooring. Other than that simply using the vacuum cleaner to pick up dust and dirt will suffice. Most hardwood flooring come with a warranty. Some will last a generation others may not be as long. Check this out when you buy the flooring.
