Dinner Party With A Chocolate Fondue Dessert
By J Fossey

A fondue party can be a lot of fun with 6 of your closest friends, with lots of laughing and joking as you go fishing for food you dropped into the fondue pot. Because a fondue is not something we do on a daily basis, some of your friends might be unfamiliar with this type of meal. They will, however, soon get the gist of how it works and enjoy a fun filled evening with the other guests.

What many people do not think of is having a fondue for a single course. You do not have to have an all-evening fondue. You can end off a regular meal with a fondue for dessert.

A chocolate dessert fondue is an all time favorite. Besides being easy to prepare, who does not like chocolate? End your dessert fondue with Irish coffees. For those who do not want alcoholic drinks after dessert, a cafe latte or cappuccino is an excellent alternative to round off the evening.

Most of the preparations can be done before your guests arrive. You can slice, chop, grate and mix the ingredients and fruit a few hours before the party. The sauces, on the other hand, should be heated only once your guests have arrived to avoid over thickening of the sauce.

You will need at least one fondue pot. Most pots can accommodate six dippers. However, a dedicated fondue pot is not a necessity. A fondue pot is really just a warming dish on a stand with a candle beneath to keep the contents warm. While it is convenient to have your own fondue set you could probably get by with what you already have in your kitchen. Although a fondue set usually includes long forks for dipping the fruit into the chocolate, you can substitute them with regular forks.

Here is a chocolate sauce recipe for a dessert fondue:

  • 6-8 chocolate candy bars or 10 ounces of bittersweet chocolate
  • Half a cup of heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter

Alternatively, you can also add almonds and miniature marshmallows or 2 tablespoons of brandy.

Make sure that you have lots of tasty bits of food to dip into the chocolate sauce. Favorites are fruits, bananas, strawberries, and other berries. Shortbread cookies are another great option to dip into the chocolate sauce. There are many possibilities of chocolate dipping foods; such as dried fruit, pound cake cut into chunks, marshmallows or even potato chips.

Keep the cut fruit in the refrigerator, covered, until you are ready to serve the fondue.

Put the cream and butter in a small sauce pan on the stove and bring it to a simmer on a medium heat. While you wait for it to simmer you can chop the chocolate into pieces, then mix the chocolate bits into the warm cream and butter mixture and stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Once you are ready to serve the fondue, pour the prepared chocolate mixture into the fondue pot keeping it warm with the candle flame.

If you leave the chocolate sauce over the candle for a lengthy period, stir it occasionally to avoid scorching.
