In the past, the most common themes revolved around a tropical beach setting, a Western setting or a 1960s theme. A themed party need not be an expensive one. This is possible if you do the preparation yourself or with the help of a good friend. Hiring a party organizer and a food caterer can be very costly so this won't be an option if you're on a budget.

But you can work within your specific budget by choosing only the most affordable materials and food ingredients. Let your creativity go to work and you will surprised that you can hold an affordable themed party even at this time of a global financial crisis.

For your decorations and games, you can simply research on the internet about your theme to get ideas. And then you can improvise by buying cheaper materials and making your own decorations, party favors and giveaways. If you're not skilled at this, ask the help of a friend who knows how to make them.

Invitations can be handmade to make it more personalized. Again, look for materials that go with your theme and create a unique invitation. You can either write the wordings yourself or use a printer. Better yet, use the free electronic invitations available on the internet and send them through email. In this way, you don't have to spend anything for the invites.

As to what food to serve for your party, you are not actually obliged to prepare a full meal. You can serve cocktail food and drinks or for a children's party, you can serve just snack foods such as cakes, cookies, sandwiches, hotdogs on stick, juice and ice cream.

Remember that you don't have to spend big for any party. What's essential is not the food or decorations but the fun that everyone will experience during the event.
