Choosing a Heavy Incense Burner For Burning Incense Cones
By Ryan_Keough]Ryan Keough
If you will be burning incense cones, then you are going to need a high quality heavy incense burner. Burners for incense cones are heavier because of the materials from which they are made - brass, stone, copper or ceramics instead of lighter weight flammable materials like wood. The cone burns completely, so a burner which can stand up to intense heat is needed - wood just won't cut it for burning incense cones.
There are plenty of heavy incense burners out there which are designed specifically for the purpose of burning incense cones. Many of these are made from brass, but are also found in copper or bronze. A brass incense burner is typically shaped something like a wineglass - a bow raised on a stem or on feet. These burners are available with or without a lid and some even come with chains so that they can be suspended. There are small burners which are suitable only for incense cones, while larger ones have room for a charcoal tablet and can be used for incombustible incense as well. A brass incense burner is a good choice - properly cared for, it will last forever.
Size is an important consideration when buying a brass incense burner - the mouth should be at least an inch and a half across - a good rule of thumb is that you should be able to insert three fingers into the bowl at once. Any smaller and you will likely burn yourself while inserting a lit incense cone. The height of the bowl is important too. The bowl should be at least an inch tall so that the cone cannot fall out of the burner.
If you would prefer a brass incense burner with a lid, you need to ensure that this lid has small ventilation holes in it so that the cone can receive sufficient oxygen to continue burning when the lid is on. You should clean the lid regularly; otherwise, buildup on the lid will cause your burner to take on a fragrance of its own. Some people prefer this, but others like to keep their lid clean to preserve the finish and not adulterate the smell of the incense they are burning with this "seasoning".
Incense cone burners are available in many different shapes and sizes. A cone incense burner can be in the shape of a figurine (for instance, a cabin with chimney or dragon with smoking nostrils). You can also use any disc or bowl which is large enough and made of a non-flammable heat resistant material; some favor Abalone shells. There are also incense burners which are designed for both incense sticks and incense cones. Whichever style you choose, make sure that it is large enough to insert a lit incense cone without burning yourself and is sturdy and resistant to heat - and of course, offers enough ventilation for the cone to burn completely.
