There are many ways to connect two or more computers together. The usual way would be through a router or network hub. A different way would be to use a CAT5e crossover cable to provide a direct connection between two computers. The this kind actually has the wires crossed in reverse to help it transmit and receive signals. A CAT5e crossover cable is a temporary solution until a proper network router, hub, or switch can be installed. Most producers of this type of cable have it colored yellow, but they can be other colors as well. For a temporary networking solution, crossover cables are the way to go.
Two or more computers can be networked together via their Ethernet ports. In order to properly do this, however, a crossover cable must be used. The most common crossover cable is the CAT5e crossover cable, which is an enhanced version of the original CAT 5 cable. In early routers or network hubs, an attempt to plug in a crossover cable will result in failure. However, recent broadband routers have been made to recognize and allow crossover cables for a connection.
The wires inside of the the cable are twisted, but in a different pattern. They are reversed in comparison to a normal CAT5. This allows the newer version to be able to transmit and receive signals from the computers themselves, instead of waiting for a router or network hub.
Manufacturers of these newer versions usually make the outer coating yellow to help distinguish it from other cables. The word "crossover" will also be printed on the coating. Some companies can make the crossover cables have a different colored coating, including red, black, green, or blue. They can also make the cable any length, up to 100 feet, that may be required for the buyer to use.
For networking without a router or network hub, using a CAT5e crossover cable is the next best thing. it has a limit of 100 feet, though, before it becomes nearly useless as in a networking environment. Companies usually will make the coating yellow, but will always print the word on the outside of the sleeve. The wiring in the cable is actually reversed compared to a normal CAT 5 cable. A crossover cable is not a permanent solution, only a temporary one until a network hub or router can be installed.
