The Beauty of Tiffany Lamps
By Jan White
A Tiffany lamp is a real piece of art and always has been from when they were first designed at the end of the nineteenth century - the first Tiffany lamp dates back to around 1895.
A number of different designs of the lamp were produced over the years and each design was made several times however there is no record of how many of each design were made. This means we know original Tiffany lamps are rare but we don't know just how rare they are.
In any case these lamps are desired the world over for their beautiful handcrafted designs and attention to detail. To get a measure of how desirable they are, two lamps sold at auction in 1998 for almost $2 million each!
The original creator of the lamps, was the eldest son of Charles Lewis Tiffany - the founder of the renowned jewelry company Tiffany and Co. Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) loved art and interior design and it became his mission to transform American interiors by providing superior decorative arts for use in the home which would be valued as much as the fine arts on the wall. In so doing he became one of the most well-known and influential interior designers of his time.
Using pieces of discarded colored glass (off-cuts from his stained glass window production) Tiffany experimented to form the first beautiful Tiffany lamp shades.
But it was a chance meeting with Thomas Edison working together on lighting a movie theater that led them to producing the first Tiffany electric lamps together.
While he had a team of artisans at work producing the lamps and creating designs under his supervision, Tiffany continued to experiment with techniques making improvements in the colors and textures of the glass used for the lamp shades and stained glass window projects.
The lamp bases designed in Tiffany's workshops were usually fine sculptures made of bronze while the shades were made from hundreds of tiny hand fitted glass segments joined together with copper foil.
Although a Tiffany lamp is out of reach for all but the richest among us, these days you can buy reproduction Tiffany lamps as well as Tiffany-style lamp shades. You will find many Tiffany lamp shades available online and in stores.
How lovely it would be to own a little piece of history with a genuine Tiffany lamp but if not (and who would dare to display a $2 million dollar lamp outside a museum!) you can own the next best thing with a reproduction Tiffany lamp shade and lamp.
