Do you know what a Diamond Pendant is?

by Frank Vanderlugt

A diamond pendant, that is something many a woman has dreamed about owning. Why, in James Cameron's film "Titanic", a diamond pendant was a pivotal plot point. It was even carried over to the Britney Spears song (and music video) "Oops, I did it again!" Yet, what is the big deal? As Rose, the old lady in "Titanic" said, it was large and very cold. She only ever wore it the one time.

The allure has to do with what diamonds symbolize. Since before recorded history, people have searched for them, polished them and adorned their bodies with diamonds. The word comes to us from the ancient Greek adamas, meaning "invincible." Even they recognized it for its toughness and brilliance, the hardest substance known in nature. But, from a scientific standpoint, they are just carbon atoms arranged in a precise lattice formation. Well, coal is a collection of carbon atoms too! Yeah, but no high society lady would wear one of those around her neck. Not unless she had one too many sips of the "punch."

Diamonds are just carbon, but the atoms have been subjected to intense heat and pressure over a long period of time. That results in their uniqueness. So, for centuries, people have sought them. In ancient India, they were seen as religious icons. In other lands, the crowns of kings and emperors have been adorned with them. Today, the Iranian crown jewels possess one of the largest pink diamonds (a very rare color) in the world. Many diamonds are part of the British crown jewels, the Kohinoor among them. It rests atop the Queen's Consort Crown and was once one of the largest diamonds known.

Large, there in lies the problem. The bigger a diamond is (the more carats it is), the more difficult it is to display and/or wear. To give you some sense as to the scale of a typical large pendant, the Hope Diamond is 45.5 carats. The average ring can hold a stone of several carats with ease. A bracelet is an excellent way to display a clutch of medium-sized diamonds. But, for the super wealthy, people so rich they almost don't have names, just numbered Swiss bank accounts, they want to really rub that wealth in other people's faces. That is where a diamond pendant comes into play. An exceptionally large stone can be made the centerpiece of a dazzling array of diamonds and/or other precious gems. A lady walking into a grand ball or other fancy affair would leave little doubt that she (or her husband) has got astro-bucks!
