Is Cholesterol Medication Your Only Option Or Are There Other Ways To Remedy Hypercholesterolemia?
By Stan Rogers
Cholesterol medication can certainly help lower LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol that sticks to your arteries and could lead to strokes and heart attacks. However, there are other options out there that can be just as effective without the potential side effects of conventional drugs. Some of these alternative options can actually provide additional benefits such as increasing the good kind, HDL as well as promoting cardiovascular health.
Unfortunately nowadays people are very quick to take medication to treat their ailments, from headaches to colds to insomnia to muscle pain. This is because they rarely consider the fact that there are alternative ways of treating many health conditions. And oftentimes these alternatives are much safer than convention meds, without the potential side effects that most drugs can cause.
Statin Medications and Natural Alternatives
If you have high cholesterol, you might be under the impression that cholesterol lowering drugs, or statins as they are called, are your only option to remedy the problem. This is not the case. There are other ways to lower LDL and raise HDL without having to resort to harsh medications. Sure, the alternative options don't work for everyone and you may have to eventually resort to statin drugs if the problem is severe. However, natural cholesterol medications do work for many people, and they can provide additional health benefits that statins cannot.
Believe it or not only about 20% of your body's total cholesterol comes from your diet...the other 80% is manufactured in your liver. So although you can help keep levels in check by watching what you eat, you really have to monitor levels from the inside out. What cholesterol drugs do to this end is inhibit the enzyme that helps produce cholesterol in the liver. That way the process is reduced and levels go down.
However, although LDL levels are reduced, there are some very serious side effects you have to contend with. Statin drugs also inhibit CoQ10 production, a very important enzyme that your body needs to function at optimal levels. The heart uses enormous amounts of CoQ10 every day, so limiting the body's supply is dangerous. Statins can also cause severe muscle breakdown and kidney failure, and the drug manufacturers warn of this possibility.
Alternatives Can Be Effective and Side-Effect Free
Even if these very serious side effects are rare, they are still a possibility, so if there's a way to reduce LDL without cholesterol lowering drugs, why would you not investigate them?
Natural cholesterol medications come in the form of herbal extracts that can not only reduce LDL, but raise HDL and promote general heart health and overall wellness. Some of these natural supplements have been proven in clinical studies to be just as effective as their conventional counterparts, with no potential side effects whatsoever.
If you suffer from hypercholesterolemia, talk to your doctor about your various options. You might discover that a natural alternative is a better option for you.
