According to research, Achilles tendinitis is the number one injury for athletes who are still training and competing over the age of forty. This isn't to say that young athletes are immune as it is still an incredibly common affliction for sportsmen and women of all ages.

Traditionally, Achilles tendinitis has always been treated with plenty of rest, icing the area and gradually building up the strength before returning to full training and competition. Some athletes also use anti-inflammatory cream and medication to reduce swelling and take away the discomfort.

However, many expect say that these methods are largely unsuccessful and this is backed up by the figures that show nearly a quarter of chronic Achilles tendinitis sufferers end up having to go under the knife to fix their problem.

Fortunately, recent findings have shown that if athletes build up the strength in their calf muscles they're much less likely to avoid Achilles tendinitis. This theory has long been talked about but only recently proved after a study by the Sports Medicine Unit of the University Hospital of Northern Sweden.

They found that carrying out a calf strengthening routine can both reduce the risk of picking up Achilles tendinitis as well as aiding recovery from the injury.
