Toenail fungus and a thickening of the toenail can be caused by several factors. One of the most common of these is exposure to moisture. This can occur in many different places and ways. Some examples of how this might occur is if you use a public shower, public pool, or walk in the locker room without sandals. Another common way toenails thicken or become infected is by wearing tight shoes. If this is the case the nail will react by growing thicker. Another common way to get a toenail fungus is to pick or cut your nails too short so that you cause minor cuts to the toe. This may lead to an infection.

Common Treatments of Thick Toenails and Fungus

Getting rid of toenail fungus can be quite a problem without the proper treatment. Prescription drugs that are ingested are often very dangerous and can cause liver damage. They are also expensive and are not guaranteed to work all the time. Over the counter pharmacy treatments usually do not have very good results either.
