Reducing Alcohol Hangovers Through Nutrition
By Doug Setter

Caution: Try these supplement formulae at your own risk.

A simple method for minimizing hangovers and alcohol damage is to mix fruit-based cocktails, such as vodka with honey and lemon or cranberry juice or rum with mango juice. The juice will provide some vitamins, electrolytes and water and re-hydrate the drinker better than just water.

Avoid drinks with sugar or pop as these will cause the alcohol to enter the bloodstream quicker. Always minimize the processed carbohydrates like candy, French fries and chips. Instead, eat foods high in protein and even fat, like chicken, pate or cheeses. As well, supplement your food intake with the following supplements:

A good starter nutrient formula:

Vitamin A 1,000 I.U.

Vitamin C 300 to 1,000 mg. (at least three times as much C as cysteine)

Cysteine 100 to 300 mg.

Zinc (chelated) 5 mg.

Selenium 25 mcg.

(Usually a double dosage of a good multi-vitamin can cheaply fit this bill.) Life Extension experts and researchers, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw recommend an advanced formula for people who enjoy alcohol and wish to continue drinking. It is highly recommended that you start out with the starter formula (which is about one-tenth the Life Extension formula) and increase it over the course of 8-10 weeks. Like fitness programs, too much too soon will result in discomfort and discouragement.

CAUTION

People with diabetes mellitus (sugar insulin diabetes) should only use these large doses of vitamins C, B1 and the amino acid cysteine with extreme caution and under the supervision of their physician. This nutrient combination can possibly inactivate insulin. During experiments with non-diabetic adults using these nutrients, the serum glucose levels remained normal and the urine samples were sugar free.

The vitamin C can give some people a burning sensation in their stomachs. This is easily remedied by taking small amounts of baking soda with your supplements. Likewise, the high amounts of vitamin C and niacin can aggravate ulcers.

NOTE: If you have hypertension or on a low-sodium diet, try using calcium carbonate (limestone), dolomite or a doctor-recommended, low-sodium antacid.

I have personally had good results with this formula. That and drinking lots of water during my stag kept me fairly coherent all night. Except the frequent trips to the washroom, I was functioning well the following day.
