Baby Safety at Home with Michele Spahr President, Safe Start Baby

Learn some new ways to keep your kids safe at home with childproofing tips from Michele Spahr of Safe Start Baby. State Farm is there for your new family with the New Beginnings MommyCast series.

Caring for a baby or toddler can be an intimidating experience. The home becomes a terrifying assault course of hidden dangers and lurking menaces. However , latest figures suggest over 50% of parents still don’t know enough basic first aid to save their child’s life. In this interview, TV GP Dr Hilary Jones talks about the research, and also the launch of a brand new safety campaign — The Tesco Baby & Toddler ‘Babysafe’ seminars supported by The Royal Life Saving Society UK. The idea is to give parents the basic skills and hands on experience on how to cope with an accident or crisis with a child at home. The seminars will teach a range of core first aid and emergency procedures, these include the recovery position, resuscitation techniques, febrile convulsions, choking, bleeding, burns, scalds, and poisoning. The BabySafe seminars will take place throughout 20 venues across the country. Find out more within this video.

  12. okay why the hell are these videos on the internet? if you seriously need that much help with SAFETY for your child that you have to go on the internet to help you you should not be a parent

  14. Let kids grow up. I think the kitchen is a place to childproof, and stairs. But if that kid bumps his noggin on the coffee table once he’ll be safer next time.

  17. So maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to judge. And insult me by saying I’m ”taking hits of something”? Please, I’ve never done drugs in my life. Not that I need to prove that to you.

  18. What I did once I brought the baby gate, was leave it downstairs. Unless we went upstairs together, then I would move the gate upstairs. The parents were the ones at fault here. These are the same people that set the baby monitor up 6 inches from the crib and were surprised when she pulled it down and wrapped the cord all around her. This is AFTER I had pointed out to them it needed to be moved. They didn’t move it until after she just about strangled herself. So yeah, blame the parents.

  19. First off, I’m a great babysitter. Ask anyone I’ve worked for. Secondly, when the little girl was going up the stairs, the parents didn’t have a baby gate at all. It wasn’t until I brought them one from MY HOME that they had one at all. They were totally unconcerned about her going up there. Thirdly, it was literally seconds. I was watching 3 children, ages 1, 2, and 3 at the same time. Have you ever tried being in two places at once? If you’ve found the secret to doing that, please share

    garciajennifer223August 17, 2010 @ 9:05 am
  20. Well then you don’t sound like a very good babysitter.
Why didn’t you advise the parents to use a second gate or at least put the gate at the bottom? And WHY OH WHY did you continually leave the child unattended when you KNEW she would head for the stairs? The fact that you claim it was for only “3 secs” sounds suspect. No wait… it sounds like you were taking hits of something. SMH!

  22. I don’t know any parents on youtube, honestly. C’mon, put this on TV, parents don’t use the youtube or video sharing websites.

    Ski0DaddaAugust 17, 2010 @ 10:46 am
  23. how about a super cute and safe baby cage?

    passportmonster41August 17, 2010 @ 10:49 am
  24. I have issues with only putting a baby gate at the top of the stairs. Of course, if your child stays upstairs all day, it would work. But most kids spend their days downstairs. If there is no gate at the bottom, then they can crawl all the way to the top of the stairs and THEN fall down. So really you need a gate at the bottom and the top. I can’t tell you how many times I would leave the living room for 3 secs, to find the little girl I babysat on the 3rd step on her way up.
