Question by littleladybugs mommy: What would be the best embroidery machine for starting a small “baby clothes” business?
My mom and I are thinking about starting a small business doing embroidery (custom-made to order) on baby-kids items. I am slightly overwhelmed in the selection of embroidery machines! I know that we want one that has the ability to be hooked up to the computer for additional templates. Price really isn’t a factor in the decision making. We also want one that has a big enough area to do larger items, like bloomers, or tee shirts and even bags if possible. if any one has any ideas that would great!

If price is not a factor, start visiting sewing machine dealers and tell them what you want to do.

Some mfg’s warranties do not cover machines used for business.

Start with Babylock or Brother as they are the most user friendly and the format they use (pes) is the most commonly found design format.

You could start small to see if this is going to work out and if it does, you can buy the bigger and better unit and keep the less expensive one for back-up. If one needs service, you won’t be out of production while it is in the shop.

  1. You need to go to a sewing machine dealer and demo machines. I love VIking. but Pfaff and Bernina are very good brands also. Sit and sew on the machine at the dealer, try out all of them.

  2. the most important thing when buying a machine for a business is makeing sure it is meant for production not in home sewing use. If you do not find a good machine meant to be used more than usual you will experience a great deal of machine break downs. i have a friend that purchased a 1 head Happy machine and after 3 weeks it broke and she had to spend a lot of money fixing it because it was not meant for production.

  3. You may want to look into a small commercial machine instead of a home machine as it is hard to do bags, Baby T’s, bloomers and onezie’s. I have a EP-4 from Melco is a 4 needle machine and weighs only 45 pds and it will stitch a area up to 200mmx240mm. They are reasonably priced also. Then you can use your regular sewing machine for just that sewing while the other is embroidering.
    Hope this helps.
