Questions to ask when buying an SLR Digital Camera
Article by Mark Etinger
In a world of low-priced cameras, it is good to know that are also options for people who take their photography seriously, but don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on a camera. For these photography “purists”, there are SLR Digital Cameras. SLR means Single-Reflex
Camera and the digital versions of these cameras allow the individual to take high-quality pictures using a variety of different lens types. The following are some important questions that every one considering a digital SLR camera should ask before making this exciting purchase.
Auto-Focus or Manual Focus?
Auto focus SLR cameras provide you with a tremendous amount of convenience when it comes time to snap your picture. However, there are several drawbacks to auto-focus cameras, including:
• Auto focus systems are run by electronics, which can fail you at the worst possible time• Auto focus cameras burn through batteries faster than manual focus models• Auto focus cameras can be noisy• Sometimes the lasers that control auto focus lenses see things differently than they human eye
Individuals who like additional control and customization options may wish to choose a manual focus camera. Manual focus SLR cameras allow the user to control shutter speed, aperture and the zoom focus features. Disadvantages of manual focus cameras include the steeper learning curve and the additional time it takes to properly set up each shot.
Can you auto-preview pictures with a digital SLR camera?
Yes. Digital SLR cameras offer all of the convenient features found in standard digital cameras, including the ability to preview pictures on the camera’s screen, cycle through photos and delete unwanted images and easily transfer photos onto a memory card or computer.
What are the Most Important SLR Camera Accessories to Buy?
Everyone who takes their camera on the road with them should have an extra battery always on hand. (NOTE: Be sure to keep your spare battery properly charged at all times.) Also, a neck strap helps you keep your camera handy while on the go. Finally, a tripod is a great choice for anyone who plans on taking posed or stationary pictures with their Digital SLR.
What are Gray Market Cameras?
When you a buy a Digital SLR camera online or at a traditional camera store, you will either be purchasing a gray market or warranty-covered camera. Both are the actual manufacturer’s product, but gray market cameras are generally not covered by a warranty (and are less expensive as a result).
How much do Digital SLR Cameras Cost?
Digital SLR cameras are available at a wide variety of price points, from 0 to 00. The price of the camera depends upon the features included and the zoom capability of the lenses. Price may also be dictated by the lens package included.
How much Memory is Required?
Although the amount of memory is a personal choice, experts agree that a one gigabyte card is the most appropriate place to start. A one gigabyte memory card will hold hundreds of even the highest quality images comfortably.

Discover a black hole,
Although this product looks like it should be a lot of fun, the reality of it is quite painful. The camera cannot be used as advertised. Specifics follow:
1) In the Instruction Manual is a section titled “Connecting to a PC” that ostensibly explains how to do same. The steps work fine until the very end, with the line, “Enter the mass storage mode to download images and video.” Unfortunately, there is no apparent way to enter the mass storage mode. Nothing in the Instruction Manual or any other information/packaging indicates how to do this, and all buttons and switches are accounted for, with none of them allowing a user to enter mass storage mode.
2) The provided software installs fine but gives an error message that it cannot locate the camera device. This is on a PC well in excess of all stated system requirements, with both the PC and the camera itself indicating in every way that the device is properly connected via a USB cable. There is no ReadMe file in the software, only a few fonts. Nowhere is there any indication of how to enter a mass storage mode.
3) Nowhere in the Instruction Manual or other information/packaging is any phone number or address, nor any indication of how to get technical support.
4) Phone calls to Discovery Communications LLC in Silver Spring, Maryland, are either answered by an operator who has no idea where to direct the call, or by someone who has no interest in pursuing the matter or even returning a call after messages are left on voice mail.
In summary, with this camera a child can take 30 or so digital pictures and view them on a low-res screen about the size of a woman’s little fingernail, and that’s about it. Caveat emptor applies, and Discovery should be ashamed for apparently having licensed their name on an inferior product that does not do what it says it will do, with no apparent way to resolve that problem.

|Durable but..,
I bought this for my 3 year old daughter who loves taking pictures with my cybershot. I read the reviews online about this camera but thought i couldn’t be that bad.
Pros
The outer case is durable.
The buttons are placed where little hand can reach them.
Cons
Very little memory, Camera was full after about 15 – 20 pics. Of course a 3 year old will take pictures of any and every thing so that will not last long.
Viewer is fuzzy.
I would recommend buying a very cheap digital camera.

|Craptastic Camera,
My daughter got this for Christmas and not only was the viewer fuzzy (fine – I can live with that) but the camera totally locked up and froze. No way to turn it off without having to unscrew the never ending screws to take the batteries out and replace them. Once she did get a few pictures in there the memory card was full before we could blink. Then the batteries died within half a day and found it impossible to upload the pictures…..needless to say, this is a piece of crap. DO NOT BUY IT. I plan to get my money back.
