Recliner Types and Buying Tips

Article by Melissa Allen

A recliner sofa offers a very comfortable way to unwind in front of the television or relax after a stressful day at work. While a recliner might be a great addition to almost any room in your home, you might not know which one will be the best for you. Read onwards for a summary of recliner types, as well as buying tips to make sure you help you in your new purchase.

Recliner TypesRecliners combine functionality with comfort. To select the recliner that will be perfect for you, pick one with features that will enhance your comfort level and suit your lifestyle. The following are some common recliner types available:

-Glider recliner: reclines and glides back and forth. It can also turn into a type of rocking chair when in a locked position.-Home theater recliner: have special features designed to enhance a person’s viewing pleasure. Some of these special features include cup holders, storage and pockets for remotes and/or magazines.-Oversized recliner: also known as a wide body recliner, this type of recliner is available in the three major recliner designs and all the recliner types, oversized recliners are intended for bigger and/or taller sized people. The seating area is at least four inches wider; scale of the chair is bigger, with a wider back and a deeper seat. Weight capacities for oversized recliners are usually higher than those listed for standard recliners. -Power lift recliner: raises the seating area to a semi-standing position, making exiting the chair easier.-Swivel recliner: allows freedom of movement.-Swivel/glider recliner: reclines, glides and swivels.

Recliner Buying TipsFirst select the room in which you want to place the recliner, then determine the colour and style of the recliner such that it matches the result of the furniture in the room.

If you have a busy lifestyle, children, or pets, consider choosing a fabric that is easy to care for, or one that is stain-resistant.

Another factor to take into consideration is who will be using the recliner. For example, if it is for a family member that likes to stretch out, then consider buying a chaise style recliner that supports them from head to toe when the chair is fully reclined. Or if you yourself spend a lot of time watching movies, perhaps a home theater recliner would be the ideal choice.

The recliner should fully support your lower spine when sitting upright, much like sitting in a regular armchair or an office chair. The backrest should be high enough to cradle your shoulders and neck, as well.

Look at the manufacturer’s product information guide to verify the weight capacity to ensure that it meets your weight requirements – you want to be as comfortable as possible and make the recliner last a long time.

Leave at least six inches of space between the back of the recliner and the wall when choosing a spot to put the recliner. Choose a zero clearance recliner that does need as much room to maneuver if you have limited space.

There are many types of recliners to choose from, but if you remember to keep in mind your lifestyle, room decor, who will use the recliner often, support, product information and space then you will be able to create the perfect spot in which to unwind.

I bought this recliner, sight unseen, for my husband, as his shoulder surgeon recommended a recliner for sleeping after the shoulder surgery that was suddenly required after an injury. We don’t have much space and most recliners are huge, ugly monsters. I found this model after much searching and reviewing online, and the idea of Zero Gravity sounded good, as well as the fact that this chair is portable, can be folded up, and can be used outdoors. Well, the chair has worked out perfectly for him. It has been four days since his surgery, and the chair has been nothing short of a miracle. The first night after surgery was extremely painful for him, and he told me many times throughout the night that he did not know what he would have done without the chair. He was so thankful for it, and to me for ordering it! My husband is not a small man – 6 ft and about 200 lbs – but the chair fits him perfectly (the XL) and is very, very comfortable. It has a small footprint, which is essential for our bedroom. While it does not look like a regular piece of furniture, we can always move it out and use it elsewhere, later. However, it is so extremely comfortable, we may not! All in all, this is a wonderful recliner. Certainly, I recommend it for any illness or injury that makes sleeping in a bed painful or uncomfortable. We are looking forward to using the chair for normal use, as well.

I currently have a zero gravity lounger from another manufacturer. However, since I am a full-bodied woman, I couldn’t get comfortable. The Faulkner XL lounger is wider and is the most comfortable chair I’ve ever owned. Almost too comfy — fell asleep yesterday and got too much sun! I’m 5’7″ and have no problem at all in reclining it. I would recommend this recliner for anyone who wants a little extra room for their extra “junk in the trunk”!
