Question by amandalaine: Why did artists put rings around the heads of people in Gothic Art and mosaics?
I was recently studying the Mosaics of Ravenna, from the Hagia Sophia. The people in the mosaics had rings or circles around their heads. I noticed that many paintings or mosaics from the Gothic art had this as well. Is there a significance to this?

They are probably halos to indicate holiness.

This is a very eye catching book. It cries out for page turning from beginning to end. If anyone were to create mosaics without attending any classes this would be the way to go.

I am a mosaic artist who specializes in and teaches the tempered glass technique. I refer to this book during my classes. Also, I often hear from people who, for various reasons, aren’t able to take my classes. I am happy to recommend Found Art Mosaics to these folks because it is the only book that offers step-by-step instructions on tempered glass projects (a tabletop, and a turtle).
