Glee: The Music, The Rocky Horror Glee Show

Glee: The Music, The Rocky Horror Glee Show

The Glee cast is back with the first CD from the second season of FOX’s hit show. Paying homage to Richard O’Brien s cult musical masterpiece, the Glee cast injects their distinctive style to such Rocky Horror Show classics as Time Warp, Damn it, Janet and Touch A Touch A Touch A Touch Me. With all the excitement around Glee’s return, it’s evident why the New York Times proclaimed Glee is now a bonafide phenomenon.

The first major disappointment in the Glee Cast CD series, for some reason they decided that “Rocky Horror” needed to be sanitized. For some reason, the suits at Columbia and/or Fox didn’t like the word “Transsexual” in “Sweet Transvestite,” so now Frankenfurter comes from “sensational Transylvania.” Huh? And instead of playing it close to the vest, the normally stellar Amber Riley over-sings it, painfully.

Then, in “Toucha Touch Me,” Jayma Mays is apparently to prim to be allowed to sing the phrase “heavy petting,” so that lyric gets altered. For a show that is all about the pratfalls and pitfalls of high school, that expression is too much? Please.

At least the autotune is gone. They also had the good sense to not try and match Tim Curry’s Frankenfurter performance. On the flipside of the coin, Chris Colfer totally nails Riff in “Time Warp,” saving this EP from total disaster. I am hoping that maybe Glee’s broadcast of the Rocky Horror episode will perhaps lead to a revival of interest in the original show, but this sanitized version is a dud.

It’s one thing to have Lea Michele do Streisand, because the admiration and respect is there as well as the voice (and the pushing to star in the eventual Funny Girl revival). But this is a travesty. There has probably never been as horrid a cover as Amber Riley trying to take Frankenfurter to church. If you’re going to do an exact copy then have respect for the original and DO NOT change the lyrics. If something is not suitable for TV (and who believes there is anything Fox thinks isn’t suitable) than just don’t do it.

I am by no means a “gleek”, nor am I “gleetarded” as coined by Mad Magazine. I do, however, acknowledge greatness when I hear it and this Rocky Horror Glee Show CD is awesome! I noticed the altered lyrics, but didn’t mind much. I was especially glad that the usual over-produced, auto-tune vocal sound is gone from this recording, in favor of natural, expressive singing. The cast does these songs justice, and it’s nice to hear them recharged in time for Halloween. Make no mistake about it, I am no big fan of the show (I’ve skipped more episodes than I’ve watched) but this ranks up there with the now classic “Madonna” episode and the performance of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” with guest star Neil Patrick Harris. This could be the best that this GLEE bunch could dish out… though that may not be saying much. It’s up to you… give it a listen!

I Love this show, but words cant even express my thoughts towards this music for the “Rocky Horror Glee Show” episode.

Keep in mind I Love the Movie and the music from Rocky Horror Picutre show as much as I love GLEE and it’s music…

Sciene Fiction Double Feature- Great Voice but auto tuned all the way to h**l

There’s a light- The only good part about it is Chris Colfer’s lines in the song.

Damn It Janet- For pete sake why does Cory Monteith always have to ruin the best songs they ever have on Glee. He always tends to yell a song, when it is not supposed to be high pitched.

Time Warp- For Heaven’s Sake- Chris Colfer hits the ball right out of the park with this one along with the main chorus, but Dianna Agron singing Magenta’s Part…Plain Awful!!! She sounds too nice and uppety…the voice is supposed to be mean, evil sounding and deep.

What ever happened to saturday night?- John Stamos has been singing for years and also along with the Beach Boys. This prooves his voice is great and the perfect song choice!

Sweet Transvestite- MY POOR EARS!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all that is where the title fits in with my thoughts on the song. They have a soulful voiced woman performing the song? Now I see why amazon wont list a song clip for you ut there. They then know the cd would not be purchased barely or even at all. They turn the song from sexual evil sounding to Hallejuah Aretha Franklin voiced girl singing it. IT WAS JUST AWFUL!!!

They also changed way too many lyrics to the songs!!! GRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saved the one and only one good song for last…………

Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch Me- Jayma Mays is not a singer nor performer but hit this song out of the ball park!! She sounded just like Susan Sarandon did years back. It does not seem autotuned nor faked out. Eventhough they changed 2 songs to fit the show(obvious words not meant for network tv before 10pm) it was great!!!

Okay, these songs are not perfect, they are not as good as the originals. They never will be. I’m a big “Rocky” fan and this album is growing on me. A few of these songs I am not fond of (example, “Sweet Transvestite”, “Saturday night”), they are covers that could have been better, but this is a tribute album. The rest of the songs I like. I am no “Glee” fan, but these songs are fun, and are good for what they are (that is covers).
