Google Goggles

Google Goggles is a visual search app for Android phones. Instead of using words, take a picture of an object with your camera phone: we attempt to recognize the object, and return relevant search results. Goggles also provides information about businesses near you by displaying their names directly in the camera preview.

Here’s a demo of Google Goggles running on a Motorola DROID. The app allows users to take photos of things and, in theory, get pertinent search results back. My experience was less than smooth, though. More info: www.mobileburn.com

  2. @Petrander Genius nerds usually sound funny. Some of Google’s guests in presentations are laughable until you realize that they are way above your intelligence level. That’s how I feel anyway.

  3. @IballVid Yes I completely agree. I hate how Apple is so big when it is really not even that great. I mean yes. They have good ideas and they have a revolutionary approach towards the market. However they use a lot of other company’s ideas as well. when it comes down to it they are just another power hungry proprietary company that in the end is nothing but a company who thinks they need to keep what they are working on so secret a bio chemical warfare lab could take notes on their methods.

  4. @applefox77 I’m sorry, I really should clarify, Apple isn’t developing stuff like this, but Apple’s Developers are. Augmentation is a new feature that has really yet to be used to its full potential. Apple is too slow moving to begin working on integrating anything of this calliber. But developers already have similar products available. Either weight, Google Goggles has potential to be something great IF they they make use of augmentation. We’ll be seeing a lot augmentation in the near future.

  8. @IballVid But that’s the difference between Apple and Google. Apple is the mean kid who wants to snatch all the toys. Who’ll play dirty politics to bring others down. Monopoly. Mud-slinging. All of that.

I hope Google just continues to concentrate on coming up with good stuff, and never plays dirty.

P.S: Before you start off, I’m not saying that Apple makes bad products. In fact, they make some very awesome products. I just don’t like the company’s spirit.

  9. this could get really out of hand. what if people start taking pictures of other people in order to trace them… they could easily get their facebook name just from a pic.

  23. @cmr5828 lol I actually agree with you. I did not know they were developing stuff like it though. Interesting. I am a huge opensource person though.

    applefox77July 23, 2010 @ 10:39 pm
  24. @applefox77 iPhone has already developed similar software. and augmentation. i don’t think they’re anything behind google in this field and either way google is likely to have this featured as an application. everything they make is generally Open Source. Fact is this is great, but Apple will make use of it as well.

    taiyibpJuly 24, 2010 @ 4:42 am
  35. @inquisitive871 it can be really useful in a lot of situation ie. when u don’t know anything about the precedence of an object, cost, safety, etc. it can be the base to, for example, a way to identify different species of plants when hiking, etc.

    lashMayfairJuly 24, 2010 @ 5:35 am
  36. lol@ the shoebox test… there was a barcode more at the far upper right corner :O

    Beaverman20July 24, 2010 @ 5:45 am
  37. I liked the compass / location spotter at the end. That could be a great separate application. Maybe with a built in 3D map overlay and a clever UI… I’m just trying some idea out.

    yotafroJuly 24, 2010 @ 6:24 am
  38. Google says to “Fill as much of the screen as possible, which you are not doing. Also, try zooming in to ONLY the bar code, and nothing else.

    mastashaker916July 24, 2010 @ 6:56 am
  39. the app is revolusionary but still needs improvment

    alexvat1995July 24, 2010 @ 7:13 am
  40. With the Dell logo, it identified it as a logo for Dell and pointed to their website for the logo. Not sure what else you would have wanted the app to reveal beyond it being a logo and identifying the logo owner and website. I think you just missed that it saw it as a logo.

    palmloyalJuly 24, 2010 @ 7:21 am
  41. from what I’ve been told, you gotta wait for the 2.0 OS before this will work, I have the HTC Hero, and this is what they told me.

    natepnkJuly 24, 2010 @ 8:42 am
  45. @henrik85 I hope so but ever since Apple rejected Google Voice on the iPhone, the relationship between the two companies have been bad. Apple needs to lighten up a little.

    aahmed215July 24, 2010 @ 9:28 am

    karlstadfreezeJuly 24, 2010 @ 10:20 am
  48. This is actually very freaking good for only being at 1.0. I can’t wait in like 2 years from now. It will probably read almost everything.

    meankookooJuly 24, 2010 @ 10:22 am
  49. it is only for Android. And it is probably possible though it took a long time for Google to make this and now Google is pulling out some of it’s apps it makes for the App Store on the Iphone since it is now competing with Apple. 8(

    meankookooJuly 24, 2010 @ 11:00 am
