I have some questions about affiliate marketing… ?

Question by Tommy: I have some questions about affiliate marketing… ?
I know what affiliate marketing is but there’s just some areas I’m a bit hazy on. For instance, I’ve read of people saying how important it is to have a good “landing page”, but isn’t that already provided by the merchant? Or is it good to produce your own? I’m confused by this. I also don’t quite understand how you get people to visit the page of the product you’re trying to promote.

Also… I was wondering what are the elements of a good affiliate site? For instance, I was thinking of promoting products to do with computers (an area I have a sound knowledge of), so would it be good to set up a website of some kind to help achieve this?

Many thanks for any help!

The pure definition of a landing page is just what it sounds like: it’s the page your website visitors arrive at after clicking on a link. It could be your home page, or any other page in your site.

You should create targeted landing pages anytime you can control where people will be coming from, and your goal is a specific transaction such as sales, registrations, sign-ups, etc. This is particularly true if you are paying for the traffic, with banner ads, sponsor links, or pay-per-click.

The best use of a landing page is not what it is, but what is can do. Your landing pages should provide a customized sales pitch for the visitor. The best way to do this is consider where the person has come from, and who they are. By providing a good match, your chances of engaging the visitor goes up, as should your conversion rate.

Well crafted landing pages almost always sport better conversion rates than simply dumping people into the home page of your site. It makes sense. When you drop people into the homepage of your site, it’s akin to asking them to fend for themselves. They arrive and spend a couple seconds before giving up and hitting their back button to move on to you competitor.

  1. The landing page is generally provided by the advertiser. What this is, is when you have a website with a banner on it for example…if someone clicks on that banner, the page they arrive at is the landing page. You always want this to be very smooth, easy on the eyes, and appealing to your consumers. You want people to stay there an do what the advertisers wants them to do, whether it be filling out a form, or purchasing as item. This is how you get paid.

Getting people to visit the page you’re trying to promote entirely depends on your means of traffic. There are various means of getting traffic (e.g. your own site w/ banners, SEO, PPC, email traffic, media buying, etc.) For instance, I’m an emailer. I have a list of opt-in users who wish to receive promotional emails from me regarding offers. I email them with links to these sites for them to fill out the form. Every time a user fills out the form, if they meet the criteria for the form, I get paid $ 8.

If you’re looking to promote computer products, and you currently have no means of data or traffic of your own, a web site is a good start. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s easy. The hardest part of making money with affiliate marketing is having the data and the traffic to send to these offers. You’ll have to work hard at SEO to get your site enough traffic to make money.

If you already have some money you can put invest, you can start media buying campaigns and actually buy traffic to send directly to these offers. But you have to be very careful doing this. It’s costly and if you don’t pay attention you can lose a lot of money very fast.
