Swords in Early Rome

Article by Swords.com

Swords first appeared between 1500 and 1100 B.C. in Celtic Britain and Minoan Crete. Almost immediately after they were first crafted, swords became not only useful for combat, but also for sport. For example, one of the earliest depictions of swords is a relief found in a temple built in northern Egypt, depicting an ancient fencing match. In fact, fencing and swordplay became so popular that Ninus, king of Assyria, used fencing masters to train his troops for battle. It was the Romans, however, who truly advanced swordsmanship to an art. They admired and appreciated swords as truly valuable weapons on the battlefield, and perhaps more importantly at first, in the gladiator ring. Gladiator bouts, originally started as a funeral rite, eventually turned into a huge event attended by thousands. The gladiators, who commonly fought in pairs, were pitted against each other for bouts that usually lasted until the death. Although other weapons were used, swords were of paramount importance to the combatants, and wounds were so prominent that the most distinguished Roman surgeons were those who specialized in these injuries. The gladiator’s training was so thorough that their techniques became adopted by the military. Recruits would wield swords crafted from wood against an object, generally a stick planted in the ground, until his instructors deemed him worthy of edged swords. The recruit’s training would culminate in an individual battle with real swords, much like a gladiator bout.Roman soldiers fighting in Spain adopted their enemies’ iron swords, far superior to the copper swords that they were accustomed to, and also learned to make full use of the sword’s tip with a thrust maneuver. With their new weapons and skills, the soldiers quickly defeated the British Celts, whose swords were short and cumbersome to wield. The Gaul Celts posed a much more serious threat, however. The Gaul’s often approached their enemies while whooping loudly and slashing their blades through their air, and once close to their foe, would strike downward in a chopping motion. If properly blocked with a stout shield, the Roman’s discovered that their enemies’ swords would bend or break, allowing for an easy counter-attack.However impressive that the Romans were on the battlefield, it was not their military prowess that advanced their evolution of swordsmanship, but rather a crippling defeat. At the Battle of Adrianople, the emperor, all his senior officers, and approximately 40,000 foot soldiers were slaughtered by the Visigoths in the course of one afternoon. The Gothic soldiers used their much longer swords to slash and attack their enemies head on. This is regarded and the first time in history where swords were not secondary to a lance or spear. This crushing defeat revolutionized the way the Roman soldiers used their swords. Instead of the thrusting swords borrowed from the Spanish, they now employed slashing swords in combat. Although over the course of the next several hundred years many new weapons were invented, none outlasted the versatility and efficiency of swords.

The sword is almost exact. The handle is comfortable the chain on the end of the handle is attached by a triangle metal piece, which i never saw in the show, but i dont see how it would be attached any other way, The end of the chain does NOT have a broken link, but it wouldnt stay on anyway. The only real problem I have is that whenever you take the sword out of its sheath, waxy stuff is on the blade. The handguard is metal, and the sword is pretty light, the blade isnt sharp, but is quite pointy at the end of the blade of course, the end of the sheath is rounded
