Y-Fronts, Jockey Briefs – Underwear That Redefined the Men’s Undergarment Industry

Men’s underwear industry has changed dramatically over the last 80 years, all because of something known as Jockey briefs or y-fronts.
Originally manufactured by a company that was then calling itself Coopers after the family behind the company, a new style of men’s underwear was born that would revolutionize the men’s underwear industry for a long time. The irony is that all this came about as the product launched during a cold winter blizzard on January 19th, 1935 Chicago.
Perhaps it was in fact the blizzard that helped to sell this new comfort and support focused style of underwear to such a rapid and extremely successful extent, revolutionizing men’s underwear forever. The y-fronts were soon to play a leading role in sending what was then the dominant form of men’s underwear – the long johns, on
their way to the history books.
Long-johns were already in fact under siege by boxer shorts which were also gaining in popularity. Between boxer shorts and this new great style of underwear called jockey briefs or jockey shorts, the long-john didn’t stand a chance of survival for much longer.
Today, the battle is ongoing between briefs, some of which still incorporate an inverted y front, or a new side fly, or fly front style opening, and the boxer short. In addition there is also a hybrid version called boxer briefs and other variations according to the style and cut of the product. Part of the reason for all this variety is that underwear for men has evolved from just a necessity to a fashion statement in and of itself.
To be seen in the traditional plain and boring white briefs is asking for ridicule from anyone that should spot you wearing them. No, now you want underwear carrying a designer brand label on them and with subtle or very impactful designs. But this might not have been possible today were it not for the Jockey briefs or y-fronts that came over 70 years ago.
It’s now time for a wardrobe upgrade with some hip Ginch Gonch Underwear or stylish retro or modern Y Fronts!
