Hearth Rugs

Article by Sachin K. Airan

Every home should have a hearth. But now with the modern technology of interior heating and cooling systems the hearth may have been replaced. But the older houses do have a fire place that will be lit up to keep the entire family warm and cozy. Since this will be in the main room, the place needs to be maintained well and kept neat and clean.

For this purpose hearth rugs are necessary. Hearth Rugs are fire resistant and contemporary in style. Not only protecting your floor from fire it also adds beauty to the hearth area. Olefin and polyester are the least expensive material rugs but they do a master job at the hearth.

Hearth Rugs are available in various shapes and sizes and designs too. The rectangular olefin hearth rugs are America’s leading rugs. They have a sturdy jute and polyester backing that can be used indoors as well as outdoors since they are perfectly weather resistant. The specialty of these contemporary hearth rugs is that they produce a char that reduces the heat transfer and prevents the flame from spreading out of the hearth.

Similarly the half circle olefin and polyester hearth rugs set perfectly well in front of your hearth. They too have the same heat resistant power as the rectangular ones. You can choose from the wide range of shapes like the half circle oriental olefin or the wool hearth rugs.

Hearth rugs are also available in nylon. These are the best if you have little kids or pets in the house. Since nylon has a higher melting point than other material, the burn spots may not be noticed easily. If you prefer fiberglass rugs you are wise since these rugs are sturdy and will not melt or catch fire at any time. This offers the best protection to the flooring under it.

Wool rugs are good for homes with no pets or kids. Wool hearth rugs are treated with fire retardant and it protects the flooring well. You can avail different colors, patterns and styles in wool.

The hearth definitely requires a contemporary and durable rug since this is the most highly trafficked area by the entire family. So be wise in choosing the best hearth rug.

I bought this for my exposed brick fireplace. I have twin 8 month old boys and both of them like to climb on the hearth. Both of them took spills and scraped their faces pretty good against the brick. I decided to try the Kid Kushion, even though there were some negative reviews about the bumper not sticking to the fireplace or the kids being able to remove the bumper. I received the bumper and installed it according to the instructions that came with it. The brick I have on my fireplace is very coarse and I was skeptical about it adhering to the brick. I was right and the other reviews are correct. I installed the bumper and within 1/2 hour my kids had removed part of the bumper. The self adhereing velcro pulled away from the brick. I decided to use a product I found at Home Depot. It is called Seal ‘N Peel caulk. It is used to weather-proof windows and doors for the winter and then be removed in the spring. It goes on exactly like silicone caulk, but after it dries it peels away. I had some left over bumper material and I did a test piece on my fireplace to see two things: 1) How well did it stick the bumper to the brick and 2) How easily did it come off when I removed the bumper. It works great! It stuck well to the small test piece and when I removed it from the brick all of the caulk stayed on the bumper itself. There wasn’t any residue left on the brick. The caulk was easily peeled off of the bumper. I then used the Seal N’ Peel to adhere the bumper to the fireplace. I placed a thick bead of caulk in the corner of the bumper and then a thick bead along the top part of the bumper. I put on as much as I could without having the caulk squeeze out when I applied the bumper. I let it dry and tried to keep my boys from climbing on it. A few hours after I applied the bumper one of my boys was holding onto the bumper rocking back and forth. The bumper did not budge and the caulk wasn’t anywhere near being dry. This is perfect for what I need it for and we will see how it stands up over time. I suspect it won’t pull away unless my boys really try ripping it from the hearth. If they do I can just peel off the caulk and reapply. Better than the velcro stickers that come with the kit. This is going to save me some trips to the emergency room. I would recommend doing a test on the area that you intend to use the bumper. The Seal N’ Peel could possibly damage the finish on your fireplace depending on the material.

This item worked well… for about a day. If your kids are like mine, they will have no trouble pulling the cushions off of the fireplace. The velcro stays together, but the adhesive gives way. The cushions themselves are nice and not too unsightly, but you will need to apply a stronger adhesive to make them last long term. Also, be careful when cutting them down to size. Mine shrank slightly after applying them, leaving some unintended gaps.
