brush and shave

(this is how I shave now-a-days)

Kinda phoned this one in… I’ve been out with pneumonia [something more serious than I originally thought]. Went back to work today for most of the day, but it tore me up, and I went ahead and took tomorrow off already…

This is a different photo from the one I previously posted. I got the idea from a commenter that said it kind of had a triptych feel. So I figured I’d make one of three different stages of me shaving. Each reflection is actually a different photo… except you can’t really tell from the centered figure because my arm is in the way.

For those interested, my shaving kit includes:
- Country Uncle 4 piece set. Mach 3 black handled razor, badger hair brush, soapdish and stand.
- Geo F. Trumper shaving soap (Sandalwood, I think)
-Truefitt & Hill 1805 Pre-Shave Oil
- Truefitt & Hill 1805 After-Shave balm

As I stated above, I used three different photos in this case, to try and give it a triptych feel. However, the right-side figure blocked out anything that would indicate the middle figure is different from the left-side figure. Anyways, I used three layers. The left-side figure was the base, the other two had layer masks applied and I painted in. The right side figure was fairly complex, and I had to be fairly tight because it overlapped with another character, I used the pen tool to create a selection that I filled with white. Because there was a definite area that the middle character existed in, I was able to simply use the pen tool to outline the reflected mirror and filled that in with white on the layer mask.

Then after combining these into one layer, I ran c2g in Gimp (GEGL tool) to convert to B&W. I set the Radius to about 500. I estimate the radius size based on how large an area I want to prevent from having a blooming or halo effect… larger numbers will smooth out large areas of flat colors (such as in the sky or a wall… )as you can see around the left hand figure, he’s got an area around him that’s a little bit ligther than areas surrounding him. If I had made this number bigger, it would’ve looked a little smoother, but I wanted the effect in this case. I also increased the number of samples to about 30. This made the process take a lot longer, but it reduced the amount of noise c2g introduced… I wanted some noise, so I didn’t increase it all that much. For iterations, I set it a little higher too, but not too high. This too makes the process take longer, and I’ve read that it doesn’t really help al that much in terms of noise…
