How to Buy a Harmonica
Article by Chromatic Harmonica
So, your going to buy a Harmonica. That’s Awesome! Seriously, Its hard to find harmonica players these days. I’m a musician and I honestly know just a handful and the average person might know none. Ask yourself, how many harmonica player do you know. Probably not many but when you see someone break out a harmonica that really knows how to play you think, wow, that’s pretty cool.
Its really a mystery when you think about it. It’s such a convenient instrument to play. You can basically bring it with you anywhere right in your pocket and break it out and start playing. How many other instruments afford this luxury. Gone camping, on the trail backpacking, whatever the case, its time for harmonica.
So what do you need to know when your making the purchase? If your like most people you might have no clue about how to go about buying a harmonica. Did you know they come in different keys and there’s at least 3 different major types of harmonica.
Lets go over the types-
Diatonic: If you are a beginner this is the harmonica for you. This type of harmonica generally has 10 holes and is available in 12 different keys. The musician is able to play a complete 7 note major scale of the chosen key. Additional notes outside the major scale can be reached by overblow and bending techniques. Diatonic Harmonicas are the easiest to learn on and therefore recommended for beginners. Don’t be fooled though, most professional harmonica players use the diatonic harmonica. This type of harmonica is ideal for all types of music, especially blues and country.
Chromatic: Chromatic Harmonicas have a button that when not activated play a major scale of the chosen key much like a Diatonic Harmonica. When the button is pressed the Harmonica is able to reach the half step notes in-between the major scale notes. This effectively allows one to play in and key and any type of scale. This type of harmonica is popular in Jazz, popular melodies, and classical music.
Tremolo: This type of harmonica has two reeds per note, one tuned a little higher then the other. When the harmonica is played both reeds sound together and the difference in their tuning creates a vibrating tremolo effect. This type of harmonica is ideal for Gospel, Old World, folk, country, Irish and Scottish music.
What key should I choose? The most common key that people prefer is C. If you are new you will want to buy a harmonica in the key of C because most training tutorials are taught using this key. The key of C will give you a nice mid-range harmonica, not to high, not to low.

Awsome Harp!,
Don’t be put off by the price. This is a the best harmonica I have ever played. It’s comfortable to play and you can get amazing bends out of it. Plus I have been playing it for over a year and it’s still going strong. It will save you money in the long run.

|Simple,efficient,enduring,..,
I bought this harmonica as an absolute beginner, and I loved it from the beginning. It sounds warm & vibrating.
Since then, I bought more expensive harmonicas. Still, this is the harmonica I love to play with the most because of its warmth, its sonic stability, and its simplicity(size, structure)–>makes it easier for you to show off techniques.
I highly recommend it, especially for beginners.

|The best,
I have owned about 30 different harps, including 5 Lee Oskars. The Lee Oskar is the best. Sounds good too. It bends easily when you want it to, and does not bend when you don’t want it to. If you don’t know how to bend the notes, get a Lee Oskar and learn how. Then you can bend notes on any of the others, but it is harder and does not sound as good. If you pay attention to the videos, most of the professionals use this brand. If you are a beginner, buy this because it make you sound better.
