As an aspiring game designer, I’ve bought a whole lot of books about game design. Scott Rogers’ book definitely stands out among the pack. Not only is this guy super knowledgable about game design, having been in the industry for many years, but he also makes the information he presents really fun and easy to understand. The key is the little drawings that adorn almost every page- they get the point across more easily than a block of text. The book is a wealth of information and tips for game designers, and what’s more, it’s actually something I would read for pleasure as well as for the nuggets of wisdom it contains. A definite must-buy!

This book is accessible to all levels of people interested in video games. I loved all the artwork – the comic book style illustrations really make this fun to read! And all the humor hidden in footnotes – snicker!
This is an author obviously comfortable with his subject, and he is having a good time telling his audience about it. I would recommend this book for people in the industry as well as anyone who has ever played a video game and wondered how it was made.

I am not in the industry, but just loved this book! The author clearly has a love for games and a knack for making great games (just read his bio).
Fortunately for us, the reader, the pages are adorned with hilarious cartoons which makes the reading even more fun. I especially liked the occasional
homage to STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, and a plethora of other notables from my childhood. I just hope the gaming industry takes a cue from this book
to create more inspiring games for us to play. WELL DONE!

This book has 482 entertaining pages that teach you game design theory, and application. The writing is very easy to read and understand regardless of the level of game design experience you may already have. Scott Rogers does a great job of breaking up the text with comic illustrations that also help enhance your understanding of the content while giving you the occasional nerd chuckle. The concepts covered in this book can be applied to a broad range of game design, without going into anything that is too specific, it serves as one of the best primers for game design that I have ever come across. This book is definitely recommended if you want to further your understanding of video game design. A+ work Mr. Rogers, and thank you on the behalf of all the readers. My only regret was not finding out what the “Famous Japanese Game Director’s” riddle answer was on why game design is like fishing when it was brought up in the book.

This book fills a gaping hole in game design texts– it’s a book on *video* game design that’s directly applicable to professional game development. This isn’t a manual for one of the commercial engines out there, nor is it a programming primer for designers. It’s also not an academic text full of nebulous theories on “fun” or “play” (although those can be quite useful, too!). The topics covered in here outline the biggest, and perhaps most overlooked part of the job, which is to take an idea and put it into clear enough terms for the team to make it. Students as well as pros can benefit from the lessons in this book.
