I usually do not take time to review a product or gush about socks. SOCKS! But this setup is so comfortable, versatile, and warm that I believe they are worth a couple of minutes to tell other people who may actually look at sock reviews.
While shopping in Reno, I discovered these by chance and grabbed them off the display to give them a try. I was intrigued by the title (Cold Weather Sock System), and the fact that the “system” consisted of two pairs of merino wool socks: a thick pair of socks (olive) along with a thin merino wool liner (blue). What first caught my attention was the fact that the CWSS is similar to the combination of socks I gravitated toward over the years of wading in cold streams and rivers while fly fishing: a thick Smartwool sock and a thin nylon liner. I have found merino wool to be warm and comfortable. For many years, this combo of thick and thin worked well enough. But in really cold water the nylon liner failed to retain heat very long. But now I discovered a “system” that was designed to work together. I bought them and wanted to try them out ASAP.
I got my chance the next time that I went fishing. I went through my routine of getting my chair and tarp in place, setting my boots and waders nearby, and then putting my socks on. I was immediately pleased at the fit of the socks. The thin merino wool liner went on easily and had a luxurious feel compared to the nylon liners I had used before. The liner also was snug, but not overly tight as to constrict blood flow – important for circulation and foot warmth. The outer thicker sock slid easily over the liner and did not bunch or pull the liner up against the toes. The overall bulk of the two socks together was perfect. I slid my waders over the socks and the fit was heaven for this wading fisherman. Now the fun part, wading in cold water to test them.
I waded in the river with the water just as cold as it was the previous week when I last fished. The previous week my feet were so numb after two hours of slowly getting colder and colder, that I was forced to quit due to pain and numbness and warm up. However, the new CWSS I had on was so effective that I forgot about my feet and just fished as long as I wanted! I was amazed at the extreme difference and total comfort this system made.
As a bonus, I have also used the “CWSS” during non-fishing activities: while blowing snow and working in cold weather. I also discovered a wonderful surprise. On warmer days or when I wade smaller, warmer creeks, the liners are just right when worn alone. How’s that for a versatile sock system? Did I mention that I really love these socks? They have a permanent place in my wading bag. Thank you Lorpen.

2 layers, and they both compliment each other very nicely. I love these socks because the wool is not scratchy, and they’re very warm.

2 sock system, moisture wicking sock with a wool sock for warmth, nice and warm but not too thick.
