Work From Home With Your Digital Camera…Part 4
Article by Jeffrey C. Andres
Can you work from home with your Digital Camera? This is a question that I am sure a lot of readers want answers to. In these tough economic times, everyone is looking for ways to supplement their income, or possibly to replace a lost income. In part one, I gave a brief Photography 101 lesson. In part two, I touched very briefly on Digital Photography. In part three, I took a slight turn and went in a different direction. I want to continue in part four with where I left off in part three. Digital Cameras verses the older 35MM format cameras.
Again, I will state that, I, like 65 to 75% of professional photographers (although I do by no means consider myself a professional) still prefer my older Olympus OM-1 35MM Camera. I have compared many of my photographs from NASCAR Racing events to those taken by friends who were using DSLR’s. Some had just the plain, simple type (like my 3.2 MP Sony), while others had a better quality DSLR with the adaptable, screw in lenses. Were their photographs any better or any clearer than mine? Were they sharper, more in contrast than mine?
Possibly because of the person behind the camera. Their steadiness of hand. Their “personal eye” to capture just that shot that they wanted. May-be even their understanding of the “rule of thirds”. Was it their DSLR, or was it their skills as a photographer. Just by putting my photograph’s side by side with theirs, I do not think you could say which type of camera took which photograph. As I stated in Part 3, The biggest advantage for Digital over Older is that with Digital you can just connect a USB Cord from the camera to the computer and instantly view what you have taken photographs of.
In my opinion, the Digital Camera age has made us “lazy photographers”. Just point, shoot, upload, doctor with software, and instant success. However, I can use the same software to achieve the same results. Just not as fast as you can. This brings up another issue or a form of photography that I do not think DSLR’S can do. I am going out on a limb here, because I have only looked at a handful of DSLR’S. If I am misinformed, or do not have the right data, then please feel free to comment on this article. Can your DSLR shoot in the Black and White medium?
That is another nice feature about the older 35MM type of cameras. You have a choice of whether to use color film, or to shoot black and white film. In the mid 1920′s through the late 1970′s, Ansel Adams perfected this technique and he is most definitely known around the world for his black and white photography. Perhaps with a photographic doctoring software program, a DSLR picture could be turned into a black and white photograph, but in and of themselves, I have yet to see a DSLR that can produce that type of photograph without some kind of “doctoring”.
The “Digital Camera” era has also done away with the freedoms that a photographer with his own darkroom had. Yet, there is a vast market out there for selling your photography. Whether it is the “old school” 35MM or the “new age” Digital realm. In Part 5, I will look into the “photo doctoring” aspect of this industry.
