Royalty-Free Music vs Rights Managed Music
Article by Robin Dewar of Music-for-Adverts
(Of course, we’d love you to use Music-for-Adverts for your next ad or project but even if you don’t, we’re happy to publish this guide to licensing and hopefully save you hours of trying to decipher legal jargon on the license page of music websites!)
There are two types of license commonly used when you buy music for adverts, film themes, websites and any other projects.
(i) Royalty-Free (Buyout music):Practically, you pay a one-time, standard fee, download the music from a site and use it for your projects: end of story.Technically, Royalty-Free really means that, for the initial price, the company/artists that composed and recorded the music are waiving their rights to be paid royalties every time the music is played. In truth, you didn’t really pay for the music itself, instead you payed for the license to use it. You do not own the copyright to the music, the composer/company does. Even with your license, they’ll have imposed certain restrictions in regards to the usage of the music. Here’s an example: you can usually use a royalty-free sound-bed anywhere you want, forever, as long as you’re not reselling it. This is a standard condition in the license contract of music producers to prevent users from setting up rival companies with that producer’s own music.Royalty-Free music is the license with the least hassles. It is also the most widely used and cheapest. On the down side, the music is often available to everyone, and is unregulated, which means that your competitors could also choose that same music and use it in their campaigns.Royalty-Free sound-beds are priced anywhere from around to several thousand dollars (for custom, studio music). (ii) Rights Managed:
It probably comes as no surprise that you wouldn’t be able to purchase the rights to a minute from Bohemian Rhapsody under a Royalty-Free license (as described above). If it were available at all, it would be released under a Rights Managed license. This is a heavily conditional license, regulated by the copyright owners so that each piece is only used by very few companies/projects and for specific targets (e.g. for local T.V. advertising in New York, for 6 months). The quality of music will be very high.Under this license, big brands would negotiate the usage of famous music (such as Yellow by Coldplay) directly from the record label. For this, they’d pay very high fees.Similarly, there are studios that produce Rights Managed music for the general public and although the licenses are far more expensive than Royalty-Free, they retain a certain degree of exclusivity for the client. These licenses expire and are tightly restricted (e.g. you cannot use the sound-bed for a national campaign if you only purchased the license for a local one). They are also monitored, as air-time increases the profits for the copyright owners (although not from you but from music licensing/broadcasting bodies).Rights Managed does come with more red tape than Royalty-Free but, on the plus side, you know that you are getting an exclusive, high quality product.Rights Managed sound-beds are priced anywhere from ,500 upwards depending on the usage.
At music-for-adverts, we produce royalty free, custom music (sound-beds) for adverts and other projects. Our prices are the lowest around (starting at just 5 U.S.) because we have set our studios up for this specific purpose and our musician/sound-engineers are multitalented so we do not have to pay session-musicians, sound-engineers and producers separately. Good Recommendation,
Amazon “recommended” this collection to me and it’s enjoyable. It’s a diverse collection ranging from R&B to Gospel. It’s for a mature audience; easy listening; no Hip-Hop.

Surprise compilation. I don’t know what the Essence Music Festival is but it appears to have a gospel leaning. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not my thing. I didn’t download the overtly religious tunes. The Beyoncé song is okay, a cover of “Wishing on a Star.” Solange’s two tunes are retro-cool in the way of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings or Duffy, so good there. But how about Chaka Khan? She sounds fantastic! Those two tunes alone are the standouts here for me. “Diamonds are Forever”? Genius choice! “I’m in the Mood for Love”? Proves her voice is still in top form, and it sounds like she’s having a good time. Thanks Chaka!
