Listen to the Drum
Article by Vivian Gilbert Zabel
Listen to the drum As it marks the pace of the PilgrimsAs they land at Plymouth Rock,As it rolls the beat of their struggleWith disease, with want, with death.Listen to the drumAs it tells of the fight for freedom,As they and others seekWhat in Europe cannot be found. Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumAs freedom’s loss is feltBy those who carry tax burdens; As they, with no one to take their part,Decide to stand, to show defiance.Listen to the drumAs English born ‘Indians’ stageA tea party in Boston Bay,A small but lasting act.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumAs pleas, as threats bring no answerBut added taxes and aggravationTo these ‘high minded’ coloniesThat dare to voice their discontent.Listen to the drumThat echoes “Give me liberty or death,”As men sign a paper, a declarationThat signals the start of a freedom fight.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumAs soldiers march to quellThe ridiculous revolt of the Yankee rebels. As shots ring out, Redcoats fallWhile more come to take their places.Listen to the drumAs the new nation’s defendersToil, fight, freeze, and dieTo hold this precious freedom.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumThat sends an answer to weary hearts. After war leaves, the countryNeeds men to build, to guide herThrough her ordeal into destiny.Listen to the drumBeat the message of a constitution drawnFrom words of Jefferson, Franklin, and more; The map needed to plot the course is this.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumThat beats the march of Washington,First a planter, a general, then greater yetAs the first leader of this infant landThat grew from a freedom search.Listen to the drumOf a government learning to govern,Of men learning to leadThrough the perilous times ahead.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumAs time passes with another war,Again with England, again their lossAs these upstarts do not giveAgainst unfavorable odds.Listen to the drumDeclare that this is the land of the freeWhere men can surely worship, can liveWith equal rights under the law.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumBeat out the message that all hereAre not yet free nor equal asA man of untold humble grandeurDemands the freedom of black and white.Listen to the drumAs soldiers once again do fight,But this time a tragic difference,A young nation is split and torn.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drum.Brother fights brother; kin is foeAs North against South, neighbor hates neighbor. The tall, gaunt man has another battleTo pull again his country together.Listen to the drum. When, after the war is through,A shot rings out, the tall man falls.A war-torn country marches to a funeral beat.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drum. The land grows outward, the wild west callsFor the adventurous, the bold to come, to see,Then to settle, to stay, to build a better world,To fight, to take, if need be, what they want from others.Listen to the drumAround the Indian fires, as they prepare to fightFor what is theirs yet being taken, but their glory is the past.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumAs despite greed, selfishness, foolish prideStill a better world does growAs men, true and wise, spread freedom’s word,Dying to defend it where ‘er they go.Listen to the drumOf the Alamo scream with anger, with painThe loss of many brave men that dieUpholding freedom’s bright banner.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumHail the towering war cloudsPiling ever higher to the east,Threatening the peace of every landThousands of miles away.Listen to the drumAs the World War descendsUpon innocent and guilty alike. The war to end wars touches then leaves.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumAs peace comes in with a roarOf the Twenties, a ragtime band,Gaiety, laughter, prohibition signs of the timesAs men vainly try war to forgive.Listen to the drumAs another enemy appears on the scene.Depression it is called; hunger, despair it does bringIn times when men jump from windows, death to find.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumOf World War Two beat out the time of lifeOf millions who live within its range.Horrors done beyond beliefMust be avenged, wrongs be made right.Listen to the drumAs sun-painted planes destroy all chance Of this maturing country standing byWithout defending freedom one more time.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumWhile children cry, grown men trembleAt the destruction man can deliverWith one bomb upon a city laid. What price the innocent must pay for the sins of others.Listen to the drum. The world once more nurses her woundsWhile this rich country helps bind themWith unappreciated time, money, care.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumOf many battles on foreign fieldsWhere the blood of young men is shed. However, harder to withstand areThe battles at home within the land.Listen to the drumOf discontent sound over this nation.Where once freedom was soughtPolitical crime is commonplace.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drumCrying like the lost soulsCovered with rubble, debrisThat crushed, maimed babies, women, menBecause someone thought the government wrong.Listen to the drumBeat in rhythm with the hearts that sobFor loved ones and friends no longer here.Justice calls for no mercy for those who had none.Listen to the drum.
Listen to the drum.In a country built on freedomThe beat can still be foundIf one tries to find, knows where to look,Not in books or buildings or laws,But among the people, deep in their hearts.Listen to the drum. This nation still is not beaten. She stands strong and ever will beWhile freedom flows in her bloodstream, her people.Listen to the drum.
Listen to our drum.

Does what it should…,
This bag isn’t bad. It’s essentially just a metal clamp with a bag wrapped around it. It’s pretty small, but seems durable. The material feels a lot like a wet suit, very stretchy. I was initially disappointed in that it’s literally just a bag and a clamp. There’s nothing keeping the form of the bag, like plastic reinforcement or anything, but perhaps this is an effort to keep the sticks from rattling during use. The sticks DO NOT make any sound in the bag during use. The “clamp” is just a C shaped metal arm with a screw that comes in to pinch it to a cymbal or mic stand. There’s a lot of leeway to mount on thicker stands. The bag IS removable from the “clamp”; the C shape has a metal part that points down at a 45 degree angle, making it look like a C with a ? mark spiralling down it. I paid 10 bucks for this off of Amazon with free shipping, any more and I would have felt ripped off for such a simple construction. Very good, but the $30 retail is insane.
