Question by ANFGoalie: What should I do if my Apple laptop wont on battery power?
When it is plugged in to a power outlet, my 6 month old 13″ Apple MacBook runs just fine. As soon as I unplug it from the outlet, it shuts down and wont turn on, unless it’s plugged back in. When I look at the power level of the battery, it says, “Battery is not charging,” even though it is plugged into external power; it also reads that the battery is charged at 85%. What is wrong, and what should I do?

Sounds like it’s time to put down the 1st-Grader computer and get something a little more adult and powerful.
Or, your battery is just dead. Replace it.

When they say ‘original’ Apple laptop battery they mean that literally. The battery I received had a serial number ending in U7SB – one of the orginal MacBook Pro battery packs manufactured between February 2006 and May 2006. These batteries were found to be defective and are subject to an Apple product recall. Fortunately, with some persuasion, I was able to convince the local Apple store to exchange the battery pack for an updated one. The Apple battery recall website will not validate you for an exchange unless you have a MacBook Pro with an early serial number.

I’ve had several of these now and all have performed very poorly despite following all recommendations about cycling. Out of the box they’ve lasted about 2.5 hours and quickly degrade to about an hour. Sadly the alternatives aren’t much better (I’ve tried third party batteries too).

Occasionally people request the battery exchange and forget to turn in the defective/old battery. Then beyond the 10 (or eve 30) day period, Apple charges the full price on the credit card. Then the original battery holder is out of luck.
If the serial number has gone through an exchange, Apple will not provide an exchange for you.

This ‘Apple’ battery came all the way from China. I don’t know if this is where Apple routinely makes their batteries …? I have been told to buy ONLY real Apple batteries, and conversely, that Apple batteries are terrible. It’s a minefield, apparently. Anyway, this one arrived as quickly as something coming from China could arrive, and I even got 2 customer service phone calls: one confirming my name and address a few days after ordering, and a follow-up after receiving it. Imagine my shock. I almost hung up on the halting, barely-English first call, thinking it was a joke, but for some reason listened long enough to realize they were indeed legit. The battery works fine so far, with no problems – which is more than I can say for the one a friend of mine purchased directly from an Apple store, for at least $50 MORE, which lasted 21 days and started to expand dangerously, threatening to explode! I’d buy from this seller again, I guess … but again, with caution.

I replaced using this model hoping for performance similar to what I had when the laptop was new two years ago.
Darn thing has a VERY short life. Probably about half of what it had when new…. Very disappointing.
