Dental-Friendly Dog Treats
By Debbie T. Davis

You can help to keep your dog’s teeth and gums healthy by feeding him dental-healthy dog treats every day. These specialized treats break down the plaque and tartar that can otherwise build up on your dog’s teeth and in his gums.

Veterinarians treat periodontal disease in dogs very commonly. This is a progressive disease that starts out with plaque, which can harden into tartar if not treated. This type of build-up can cause gingivitis, with its symptoms of swollen, red gums. Dog chews like Greenies and Dingo Tartar dog bones, along with other brands, can help keep your dog healthy and comfortable.

If your furry friend has brown tooth deposits, painful gums or loose teeth, he may have periodontal disease. He might also have bad breath if he is affected by gingivitis. Other signs of potential dental troubles include pawing at his face, lethargy, different chewing habits, weight loss and loss of appetite. You can brush your dog’s teeth, which is certainly helpful in keeping dental disease at bay, but some dogs don’t permit much brushing. Dental-healthy treats can take up the slack there, and help to keep your dog’s teeth clean.

Treats for dogs serve a dual purpose if they fight periodontal disease while the dog gets a tasty treat. You can find dental dog chews in a variety of flavors, but most of them are green, so they’re easy to spot when you are shopping. Nutri-Dent makes dental dog rawhide chews that many dogs find quite

palatable.

Dental treats are one way to help keep your dog’s smile white and clean, but he still needs to be checked by a veterinarian at least once, and preferably twice, a year. Chewing helps to remove a lot of the debris from food that can otherwise build up between your dog’s teeth. A dental dog bone will also give your dog something to do, to alleviate boredom. Natural dog treats that also help keep your dog’s teeth clean can keep your dog busy when you leave for work, if he suffers from separation anxiety. It gives him something else to concentrate on, other than the fact that his mom or dad is leaving the house. It is better, however, to watch your dog while he chews on dog treats or dog bones, to make sure he doesn’t choke.

Keeping your dog’s mouth healthy begins when he is a puppy. That’s the best time to get him used to routine brushing, and also to let him teethe on dental chew bones. Start with very short sessions of tooth brushing, and gradually increase the time, until your dog thinks of tooth brushing as just another part of his routine. Give your puppy lots of praise, and lavish him with dental-healthy dog treats to reward him for his cooperation.

When you brush your dog’s teeth, use a natural tooth paste that is made especially for pets. The dental chews will help, but brushing really should be done at least twice a week. You may also find that your pet accepts dental wipes more easily than a toothbrush.
