The need for more recycling – Office Light Globes!

Article by Globe Jockeys

It’s somewhat striking that we so often solve one problem only to create another. Take for example Australia’s new regulations regarding light bulbs. In saving energy have we created a landfill issue?

Since early 2009 the Australian Government has legislated against the sale of incandescent light bulbs, and actively encouraged the use of more energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s) which are a newer version of the good old “fluro tubes”. The use of these newer bulbs is expected to help the environment by cutting back emissions to the equivalent of removing 500,000 cars from the road (* see below for link reference) That seems quite a significant achievement.

However, at the same time as the above legislation has taken effect, an investigation has been underway regarding the disposal of the very same bulbs! (# See bottom of article for reference link) The study has found that the mercury content in the fluorescent lights poses a significant threat to the environment if it is disposed of in regular landfill. There are already some states which forbid the disposal of mercury containing fluorescent tubes in high volume (from commercial or institutional facilities) but one must assume that the large scale use of the CFL’s in housing would also dramatically affect the amount of mercury going into landfill.

So an initiative by the name of FluroCycle has been instigated to encourage the use of recycling the new style light bulbs. Specialist recyclers are able to reuse the glass, mercury and other elements by crushing and separating them. Some of the mercury even gets used in dental fillings! This begs the question, how much energy does it take to recycle one of these globes? Very little! Almost nothing, compared with the energy expended sourcing the elements in the first place.

A new breed of Australian companies, even before legislation arrived to care for the environment, have taken on the responsibility to dispose of office and commercial fluorescent tubes while keeping the environment in mind. They have begun to pave the way for a solution to the domestic problem that now faces the Australian public.

Here is a thought – why not take your used home light globes into the office and ask them to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way by calling a responsible fluorescent light disposal company? Some can do more than just dispose of them, they can replace those annoying blinking lights in the office while they are at it!

So even though we are saving the environment by not burning more fossil fuels with the use of energy efficient light globes, this will not remove the need to be ever vigilant in our recycling endeavours. Can you see a little CFL collection box right next to your used inkjet cartridge box at your place of work?

    A Best-Selling Globe, August 16, 2006

This is my second Replogle globe. Replogle is the best! Their Pioneer World Globe has a little of everything (well almost). It shows major cities, raised relief mountains, ocean currents, color-coded countries and states, and legend. Like most of their globes, it also comes with a plastic time zone dial over the north pole, so you can sort of figure out what time it is in other parts of the world compared to others. My favorite feature which stands out among others is its gyroscopic apparatus, which enables you to tilt the earth upside down without lifting its base, so you can see Antarctica in its entirety. With other lower-priced globes, you have to lift the whole globe, and the base gets in the way, so you really cannot see Antarctica.

There are two things I dislike about this globe. It has no topographical information, but I suppose that is what the Atlantis World Globe is for. (I guess you cannot have everything.) Also, it scratches easily, so don’t bang it around.

Another insignificant thing I notice is the placement of the political information. Because the globe is constructed with strips of cardboard (like orange peels), none of the city, state, or country names are printed across two strips. It does not take away from the quality of information; it’s just quirky to look at. I am very detailed-oriented and pay attention to everything. Most of you probably will not even notice this.

    Excellent details.
    Up-to-date political boundaries.

    Cons:
The globe’s skin seems could have been done better.
The quality of the globe stand is not as good as I had hoped.

I purchased this globe for my daughter’s 6th to 8th graders. Her job is a challenging one filled with classrooms full of rambunctious pre-teens. The Pioneer Globe allows for interaction with real-world events (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan) and real-world tragedies (California fires, Hurricane Katrina) and life-altering events (polar ice caps, and Greenland melting). This globe is up-to-date and the children can see and learn where all these events are happening.
