Stamp Responsibility Historical Past

Stamp duty was levied in the UK in 1694 to pay for the war with France. Initially only planned for four years, like many different taxes it generated such excessive revenues for the government that it was never repealed.The tax lined “vellum, parchment and paper”, however this was extended in the course of the 18th and 19th centuries to cover a range of goods, including newspapers, insurance coverage policies, gold and silver plate and even hair powder. In 1808 the tax extended to property sales.* 1765 – The attempted enforcement of stamp obligation in English colonies in America led to protestor’s demands of “no taxation with out representation”. Finally this led to the Boston Tea Occasion and the outbreak of the American Struggle of Independence.* 1797 – William Pitt the Younger described stamp responsibility as “simply raised, urgent little on any explicit class, particularly the decrease orders of society, and producing an income safely and expeditiously collected at small expense.” He increased the tax by virtually double that year.* 1984 – Increased threshold for stamp obligation on property from ?25,000 to ?30,000 and the very best fee of stamp responsibility diminished from 2 per cent to 1 per cent.* 1991 – The Conservative authorities temporarily suspended stamp obligation for nine months on all properties price lower than ?250,000 in an effort to spice up sales.* 2000 – 2001 – the Inland Revenue acquired ?2.a hundred forty five billion from residential stamp responsibility; in 2002-03, it received ?3.fifty nine billion.* 2005 – Funds – Brown elevated the zero price stamp responsibility threshold from ?60,000 to ?120,000, and increased it once more in 2006 to ?one hundred twenty five,000.* New 5% threshold above ?1m will even be launched from 6 April 2011.Campaigners such because the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) want additional adjustments to the controversial tax. The CML says that stamp responsibility unfairly restricts first-time buyers, locations a higher burden on the south of England and encourages “value bunching” just below the thresholds. Instead they favour a graduated structure that only fees increased rates of duty on the proportion of the property value above the thresholds.

Need better ink.,
The stamp itself is pretty good … completely covers name and address without being able to read through. The problem is the ink. I accidentally wiped something I stamped with my arm and it all wiped off. I thought maybe it wasn’t dry enough so I went to my recycle bin and pulled something out that I stamped the day before and it wiped off with and paper towel. I tried a few different types of mail and all wiped off.

|LESS SHREDDING TO DO,
We were given this item as a gift. We liked it so well we ordered some for other family members, plus an extra one for us. After reading the other reviews that commented on being able to wipe the stamp off of certain items we read the instructions that come with the stamp. It does not adhere well to magazines or anything that has a “slick” finish. The ink is “grease” base that covers printed paper matter really great; things like printed checks that come with credit card notices or anything you print off the computer, etc. We will continue to use as it has cut down on some of our items to shred.

|Great product, but let ink dry before tossing your stuff!,
When I received this item, I was amazed at how well the combination of letters masks your confidential information. Anything with adhesive is very bad for shredders, so I use this on anything sticky (package labels, magazine labels, etc.) and also on some mostly generic items with only a small spot with confidential / address information. I have had this product for a couple months now and it’s great. I did find that on some magazines, the stamp works very well but after the ink dries, you can see the information that is underneath. I believe that this probably bled through due to the type of surface that I stamped it on, but just make sure you test the ink and let it dry completely before tossing your stuff – at least until you find out what it works / does not work on. I would definitely recommend this product and have, in fact, purchased three more of these to give as gifts. It’s a great way to help protect your confidential information!
