Question by icegurl356: How was the latin root “vanus” which later becomes “vanity” used?
This is for my English Essay. Basically, the etymology for “Vanity” is from the Latin word Vanus. I need to find out how the old latin word was used long time ago. All I know is “vanus” means idle, emptiness, void. So, examples of “vanus”? (For example: “Vanity” right now means conceited and is used to describe a person who is selfish and self-centered) Again, what was the usage of the Latin word, “Vanus”?

I thought it was vanitas/vanitatum. See if you can access the Oxford English Dictionary online. It will give you a complete history of the usage of vanity/vanitas/vanitatum. That’s what the OED is all about.

My three year old loves this set. She can actually see herself in the mirror unlike her old one. She loves to sit and put

make up on herself and her dolls. The top of the stool comes off and can be used for storage. It is a much sturdier table than I thought as her old one wobbled. And this is the best thing of all….I put it together myself!! Did not have to wait for daddy to come home from work!! This set is perfect for a three year old that likes to play make-up!

Last week I bought the Barbie Vanity by Step 2 from TRU(made exactly the same except for the Barbie logo and a sticker or two; everything else is the same.) and my husband and I put it together last night. It took about 20 minutes and wasn’t hard at all. You do need to use an electric drill where the instructions suggest. My granddaughter is in the 95th percentile for height and it is perfect for her with plenty of growing room. It’s built very sturdy and stable as most Step 2 products are. There are no annoying voices, just a little light above the mirror which shuts off after 5 minutes. Also, there aren’t many accessories that come with it, just a comb, brush, and small mirror. I don’t mind though because of the higher quality of this vanity. This is a very pretty toy. My granddaughter really liked the Cinderella talking vanity, but after looking at it I thought it was way too small and not built very well. I also liked the fact that this one didn’t talk. I did buy some pretend make-up and a little hair dryer that really works(no heat!)to go along with this set. You really can’t go wrong with this one.

I have a 5 yr. old who’s tall for her age. She had her heart set on a vanity. Most of these plastic ones are too small for her. I found a good-sized wooden one (VERY STURDY) for even less than this one cost.(…) Don’t know if they’ll post this in the reviews, but I just had to share, in case there’s someone with the same situation…

My daughter received this for Christmas and it is the best thing ever. She is going to be 4 soon and loves to do hair and makeup. This vanity is just the perfect size for her and is very, very sturdy. I looked at the Disney Princess vanity but it seemed so small and her legs would never fit underneath it. I would recommend this vanity over any other for your little girl.

Bought this for my daughters, 5 and 3. They love it. It’s very durable and the mirror is great. It’s also nice having the storage bench!

If you’re looking for one, this is it. I’m very pleased.

  6. The origin of the word “vanity” (that which is vain, futile, or worthless) is from the Old French vanité, originating from Latin “vanitatem” (nom. vanitas) meaning “emptiness, foolish pride” which root is from “vanus ” (empty, vain, idle, false, untrustworthy,self-conceited).

  7. Vanus has a lot of generally negative meanings, including the same as English uses for ‘vain’:

    Without substance
    Worthless
    Empty
    Not to be depended on
    False

    Some quotes:

Vana polliceri = To make empty promises
Orationi vanae crediderunt = They believed a vain speech.
    Vanum gaudium = Empty joy.
Delectari vanis rebus = To be pleased by worthless things.
