Coffee Table Storage Options
By Rebecca Jayne Thomas
For many people living in small inner city apartments finding suitable storage for all of their possessions is an ongoing problem. One of the many ways of tackling this issue is to ensure that every possible inch of space that can be used as storage is utilised. Whilst areas such as cupboards and wardrobe space are often considered many people fail to realise that furniture can also provide great storage space as well as fulfilling other purposes. Examples of this might be adding under bed drawers for clothes and bed linen storage, benches with lift top lids for storing items that are infrequently used, or using coffee tables for storage.
Many people view a coffee table purely as a decorative item, making a style statement and giving a sense of coherence to a room; however, they can also perform many other functions. In fact, many coffee tables take up a significant amount of floor space so using them for more than one purpose makes sense when storage space is scarce. Several different types of coffee table are available that offer storage. The key to choosing the right one for you is to decide whether you require the items that you want to store to be on display or not, and whether you need them to be readily and easily available or not.
For some people wishing to store books, memorabilia or collections of items glass topped tables with storage
underneath can be a great option. Not only are the items stored but they provide a point of interest in the room and remove the need to consider coffee table decoration. Many items are not suitable to be on display however, and in this case other storage options are more suitable. Many tables incorporate drawers. These can be used for things that are required on a day to day basis, such as remote controls, magazines, place mats and cutlery. They are suitable for people that have a lot of items that need storing but need to be readily accessible.
Another type of coffee table that can offer large amounts of storage is the chest or box type of table. These tables often have a lid that lifts and can provide large amounts of storage space within them. However, the fact that the surface of the table needs to be cleared in order to open the top means that generally they are more suited to items that are not used regularly, such as items that are only used on festive occasions or that are changed over seasonally.
Coffee tables are also available that offer open shelving for the storage of regularly used items. The only downside to this type of storage is that it can quickly become untidy and can ruin the appearance of both your table and your sitting room. Whichever type of coffee table you choose it is important to consider whether the option of storage is something that might be useful for your home and if so the type and amount of storage that you require.
