General Team Sport Betting Tips
Article by Sydney Jones
Team sports account for the majority of sports betting. Though each sport is different, there are common-sense betting strategies that apply to all American team sports across the board and most of the others as well:
1. Defense, Defense, Defense: If two teams are about equal, and one has a better defense, that one is the better bet. It is generally easier for a stifling defense to frustrate a high-powered offense than it is for an offense to overcome such a defense. This applies to all team sports including baseball, where pitching is the key element and hockey, where the goalie is the most important player on the ice.
2. There’s No Place Like Home: This little pearl of wisdom applies to sports as well. Although it is true to varying degrees, depending on the sport and the characteristics of the venue, in most cases teams do better at home. Sometimes a team is only marginally better at home, while other teams hardly ever lose there. When contemplating betting on a particular game, be sure to look at the home team’s home record. In addition, if a team is playing in temperatures or conditions they are not accustomed to, the home team has a better chance than usual.
3. Visiting Underdogs: Typically, the home team is given a few points on the spread just because they are the home team. In many instances, you are better off taking your chances with the visiting team. Since you are betting on the underdog, you will win more or lose less, depending on the outcome. This is especially true in NFL football.
4. Don’t Bet On a Streak: Sure, it is fun to watch a team that seems to be on an unstoppable streak, but it is going to end sometime. If the streak is longer than three games, it is generally a good idea to bet on the opponent. This goes for both winning and losing streaks, unless the team is particularly good or bad. If a team is truly having a horrible year, they are that much more likely to be stuck in a losing streak for more than three games, and vice versa.
5. Change is Bad: Generally, if a team undergoes significant changes during the season, it will take them a while to get back on their feet. This could be due to trading their best player, replacing their coach, or a multitude of injuries. Either way, it is a good idea to stay away from these teams until things calm down – at least three or four games.
6. Injuries Are a Killer: Be sure to check both teams for injuries before you bet. If a player has been injured for a while, and a team has been doing well regardless, it may not be as important, but an injury to a key player is always difficult for a team to overcome. Some players have injuries listed, but they play anyway. Be careful of this, as some coaches deliberately list injuries to make a player seem less capable than he actually is.
There are exceptions to every rule, and these tips are no different, but they hold true the vast majority of the time. Keep them in mind, and you will be off to a good start in the world of team sport betting.
