RC Airplanes – The Buddy Box Makes Learning To Fly Easy!

In an earlier post (“RC Airplanes–Finding a Club and a Certified Instructor”), I promoted joining a flying club and training with an instructor, as opposed to learning on your own, for anyone new to RC airplanes or helicopters. This time let’s talk a bit more about club instruction and also about using a Buddy Box. There are two kinds of club or side-by-side instruction–first, the single radio transmitter (TX) method and secondly, the Buddy Box system. With the former, you and your instructor both use the same radio transmitter, passing it back and forth between you as the need arises (i.e., when you encounter trouble and a crash seems imminent).
Most certified instructors employ the Buddy Box, as a significant improvement over “pass-the-box.” They prefer the Buddy Box because it eliminates any delay in handing the TX back and forth, letting the instructor take over immediately should you lose control, and also allows training at lower altitudes. Most aviators agree there’s no better way to learn to fly RC airplanes and helicopters, than with the Buddy Box. Using this system takes pressure off the beginner, and often saves you money by preventing potential crashes. Simply put, it involves the use of two transmitters linked together by a training cord; the student has one TX, while the instructor holds the master unit, and control is transferred from one to the other by depressing or releasing a switch on the master TX.In practice it works like this: since you are just beginning your training, the instructor will execute the take-off for you, ensure that the plane achieves a safe altitude, then hold down the switch on the master TX that allows you to take over. So there you are, flying your RC airplane all by yourself; everything seems to be going great and you’re probably thinking you’ve really gotten the hang of it when, just like that, your plane stalls out! Now you are probably panicking but there’s no need–the instructor has already released the switch and is back in control, your plane has leveled out and a crash has been averted.
You will keep working with the Buddy Box until you are ready to solo. When that time comes, because you’ve been an attentive student and had a good instructor, and utilized training tools like the Buddy Box, you will have the confidence that comes from having developed your basic flight techniques-though there will always be more to learn, and a need to sharpen those skills, especially as you move on to more complex, faster and more maneuverable RC airplanes!

Great solid plane,
For a price of around $25, it flies pretty descent and you can have a lot of fun in a good size room. It is only a two way so it tends to fly in a swooping motion but with a little experience, you can get it to fly fairly steady. On the plus side, it is very small and durable. Crashes are not a problem for it. I would recommend it for someone looking for a small indoor airplane. The only thing is I wish I got the yellow one instead of the white one.

A nice 2 channel infrared plane, but goes a little to fast. I can’t fly it outside because the infrared sensor is too weak. You might need a gym for good flying.

I love this plane. I have been using several big RC planes, but this one ia great when the weather is bad.
