Solingen Puma Knives – Impressive History
Article by puma knives
Puma knives from Solingen have a very interesting history! Puma-Werk of Solingen, Germany, actually originated in the water-powered mill workshop of Johann Wilhelm Lauterjung just on the banks of Wupper River. Lauterjung registered his first trademark with the Solingen Master Cutlers Guild in 1769. They were able to make swords, hunting knives, shears, razors, and other metal products with the then-current technology of natural sharpening stones and hydraulic water power. In 1855, Nathaniel Lauterjung brought the company to the German town of Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia. A few years later, Puma Knives started on another factory to increase their exports.
By 1900, the company was officially called “PUMA-Werk, Lauterjung und Sohn”. When World War II started, the factory was placed under the government to produce war supplies which lasted until the end of the war when the company went back to making civilian pocket and household knives for use. The company began to focus only in top quality fishing, outdoor and hunting knives when a certain Oswald von Frankenberg und Ludwigsor have joined the company in the year 1953. He then worked with Germans and other nationalities in creating knives that have earned international awards and recognition.
One of the most famous hunting knives present on the market today is the Puma Universal Jagtaschenmesser, which was made with the cooperation with Puma Knives and the former head of the Rominten state hunting ground and also, the current President of the International Bloodhound Federation. Because of this, Puma Knives is currently focusing on the 5 categories of knives for the public; hunting, trekking, hunting folders, sporting folders, fishing knives, and accessories such as sheaths, sharpening stones and pouches. Puma Knives is famous for etching the name, number and year of the manufacture on the blade, which makes older knives as highly collectible items. Puma knives are known for being more expensive than the other brands, but it is due to the fact that they hand-make each blade and use only the highest grade steel and materials.
Two of the most famous Puma Knives brands include the Bowie and Damascus knives. The Bowie is 11 inches long with a 6 1/9 inch long blade. It is very elegant, with the stag horn as the handle and a single finger guard very much like the traditional American frontier knives.

Awesome Knife/Tool,
I really like all the features of this Swiss Army Knife. It was affordable and really has a lot of useful tools. Some tools not mentioned above packed into this knife include:
Needle (near the corkscrew)
Micro Small Screwdriver within the corkscrew
metal saw
wood saw
These things come in really handy in the tackle box or glove compartment in the car. They also really work well hiking/backpacking/camping or unpacking or whenever a quicktool is needed.
A great knife at a great value with a great warranty.

|Great for the botanist/biologist as well as the handyperson,
I like this particular Swiss army knife because it has a bit more than the standard knife. As a botanist and biology teacher, the hand lens has been used many a time to examine detail on a moss or beetle. The saw is great for camping, as well as collecting specimens. Additionally, you have all the basic handy gadgets you need on a knife: screwdrivers, scissors, nail file, tweezers, etc, as well as your basic, essential knife blade. I’ve had one of these for over 25 years, and have used it on five continents and for a hundred picnics. My only complaint is that as a lefty, food/muck can get lodged in the grooves of the handle when you use the blade (e.g. cheese, bread crumbs, etc). I use the toothpick to clean it up, but a hassle nonetheless.

|Be careful about this purchase.,
Swiss Army Champion Plus which is not as good as the plain Swiss Army Swiss Champ Pocket Knife but is priced at $17 less. I had previously purchased the Swiss Army Champion Pocket Knife which has a pair of minipliers that work as well as the usual hemostats for fishing. That is the only difference that I can see between the two models. Given that gold handled hemostats are available for under $5 at most fishing stores that would make this the better buy but this is not the top of the line that the name implies. So 4 stars for this Swiss Army Swiss Champ Plus and 5 stars for the Swiss Army Swiss Champ Pocket Knife.
I always wondered what the hook thing is for on the other side of the knife from most of the other blades. After a little research I found it is for carrying stringed packages or grocery bags and really converts the knife into a comfortable carrying handle instead of having it feel like you’re losing a finger at a knuckle.
